cam help

i've been contemplating a cam for a while now, trying to get all the info i can before i make a purchase. I think its coming down to f13, tr230/224, or a comp 230/232. What do you guys consider? any pros/cons would help greatly. I plan on using the patriot gold spring kit. i am looking for my 2000 ss, and would like to keep it daily driveable. Stock tuning will have to do until i can get more cash. also, should i go with the 112, or the 114 lsa, i would like a lopey idle, but not so extreme that it wants to die out every stoplight when its cold. thanks for any help, it is appreciated

Re: cam help

I say if you're doing a STOCK tune, try something near the stock intake/exhaust duration ratio, kind of like a 226/230 with a single lift at around .585 or .590. Anything more dramatic on the duration or different lifts will be a little more difficult for a stock tune to compensate for.. <-- am i right? I heard that from a few friends... not 100% on it..

Or you could go for a MadZ tune or PCM for less, those are cheap and are better than nothing. If you go that route, get the comp 230/232 or F13 with 112. those are basically the same cams. (I bought the F13 112 and patriot golds myself)

Re: cam help

with the stock tune...just about any cam is gonna be barely drivable when cold. and even when it's warmed up there is a good chance it will run like ****.

any of the cams you suggest will make a great setup with a proper dyno tune.

basically...if you aren't gonna do it right the first time...don't do it.

so wait till you can afford the dyno tune along with the cam purchase, otherwise you'll be very frustrated.

Re: cam help

The less overlap you have the easier it'll run on the stock tune. The 230/224 has the least amount of overlap out of the cams you picked. Last month we tried to run a 230/224 on a stock tune. Within a week we had a dyno tune scheduled for it. It's doable, but gets old VERY fast. Having to wait 45 seconds after starting for the car to find an idle and not die got old fast. Almost as old as not being able to use the AC or as old as the car dying everytime you came to a stop sign.

The bigger cams would be even worse.

My suggestion is if you can't afford the tune then you can't afford to do a cam swap just yet, wait until you can do the swap and the tune shortly after. Just my .02

Agreed!!!!
Just the 2 weeks until I got a tune on my 226 grind sucked and it wasn't a stock tune either.
