Buying a 2000 camaro, Sketchy seller. plz read

My buddy is looking at a 2000 Camaro SS, its a nice looking car with "low Km's"

now the low km thing im skeptical about, it only had 8000 km. which is really low for a 2000. but possible. he said he parked it for 2 years cuz he didnt have time to touch it.

but looking at the front there is a good number of stone chips.

i bought mine with 40 000 km and i dont have as many stone chips as this one.

Basically, were thinking he disconnected the odometer. but i dont know if thats even possible on a new camaro. let me know what you guys think, if its possible or not, or other ways to check to see if he's trying to scam him.

run a carfax on it. the only way to do that is change spedos no way to unhook it. check other things on the car like the brake pedal see if it has the wear of a 40k mile car also look at the tires.

I'd rather have a car that was driven off and on for 2 years than one that was just sitting.

If it does look like it's been driven a lot then it probably has. Even if he did park it for two years...5000 miles (8k km) in three or so years is nothing.

Still on the factory Goodyears? (F1's I think)

And yes it is possible to unplug the odo...I knew someone that did it with his '01 Z28. When he sold it, the odo showed about 40-45k miles and the car probably had more like 70-80k.

Yea run a carfax on it..I wouldnt go by stone chips...when I was stationed in alaska...my 2003 chevy tracker 4x4 was 2 weeks old w/ a few hundred miles and already had scratches on the body and a cracked windshield...Not sure how the weather is in canada but id assume it was similar.

Check The obvious things, look under the car for grime, Look at the tires, and brakes. What condition are the floor mats and seats in? Run around the car with a magnet to make sure it wasn't sitting cause it was wrecked... Take it to a trusted mechanic, and have them get it on a lift to inspect the underside, etc...

I dunno how he did it...wasn't something I was going to do or would do...so I never bothered to ask.

I'm sure this guy wouldn't leave it unplugged when he's trying to sell the car (if he actually did unplug it).

Well if it was still unpluged none of the gauges would work. I think they can do it by just taking the fuse out, anyone know if the PCM records the mileage?

I don't think the magnet bit would work - the only metal body panels (on an '02 at least sure the '00 is the same) are the rear quarters and the hood

I don't think that stone chips are indicative of high mileage, just indicative that hte car was driven on gravel roads

I agree with the other posts...

Check for brake pedal wear, seats, tires and steering wheel

If it is a manual transmission, high miles or not, drive it to make sure you don't hear any strange noises coming from the rear end.

Like lunchbox said, the ole' magnet trick won't work..
