Buy ls1 with heavy mods and76k?
I work @ a dealer where we took a 98 z with long tube headers, MAF, NOS, Air box, rev limiter, hurst shifter, and other suspension goodies. It runs excellent but idles rough and has some valvetrain tick at idle. Could aftermarket rockers and springs cause this or do ls1 valves need adjusting? I know this motor has been run hard. I've also heard of early ls1's oil problems. I have a 96 ws6 that is tired @128000. I know I could be trading one prob for another. How do ls1's hold up with mods? This one runs like a scalded dog but the NOS and Valvetrain scare me.
A dodge dealer! Got a friend who is a mechanic who has a 00 ws6 but his is stock and whisper queit compared to the z. Does anyone have ls1's with cams-bigger valves-springs that cause noise. do ls1 valves need occasional adjusting like lt1's? Valvetrain noise is what scares me most. Guess i could pull covers!
The noise of the engine might depend of what cam it was modded with. If the car is modded with a cam that has an LSA below 114, it might lope like a ***** and crack your teeth. Some modded LS1s sound like sewing machines. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them. Good luck and I hope that you find a car that you enjoy.
Well you know one thing if the motor has been run hard and its still running hard then it will handle your fears. As for the drivetrain noise thats due to the cam. LS1's are noisy motors with all kind of tics and knock sounds, even when they are new. With injectors and the motors general nosie most LS1's sound like they need a good valve lashing, but when they get opened up you find out they are just fine.
