A bunch of questions, that seem stupid

hey I have a 2000 Z-28. And I have a whole bunch of questions.

1. Is it an LT1 or LS1?

2. What's the difference between the two?

3. Does anyone know where I can buy front speakers for my Monsoon system? I blew the front two.

4. I want to get the ram air upgrade. What do I need and where online can I get it?

Thanks,
Paul

1. LS1

2. Everything. The LT1 is iron block, aluminum head; the LS1 is all aluminum. They share nothing in common other than they are both V8's. The LS1 is 346 ci, the LT1 is 350 ci.

3. ???

4. Check the sponsors/GP forum on this site.

Regarding your speaker question, the answer is probably "only at the dealer" I've been told by several stereo shops that you cannot just drop in a pair of Pioneers, Alpines, etc off the self due to the difference in system impedance.

Most cars systems run at 4 ohm impedance, so most "off the shelf" speakers are 4 ohms. HOWEVER, GM decided to run a system with lower impedance (2 ohms?) which means any off the shelf speaker you drop in will play not nearly as loud as OEM speaker your car came with. The only solution is to rip out the factory amp (also running at less than 4 ohms) and factory speakers and rebuild the system using 4 ohm components. I do not know if the head unit will work with a 4 ohm amp so you might need to replace it too. (If anybody out there knows the answer to the head unit I'd like to know).

I'm thinking about putting a 8" sub in the rear and a set of Infinities up front and a pair of 6 3/4s in the rear seat panel, and just leave the other speaker holes empty. I have a few amps laying around the house so I might be able to get it done for less than $600 or so.

Hope this helps.

So how do you know I have an LS1 and not the LT? Are all 2000 z-28's LS1's? Oh and which is better?

All 98-up Camaros and Firebirds have the LS1 as their V8 engine. Speaking from stock performance, the LS1 is considered the superior engine. Lighter with more peak horsepower and torque. People (around here especially) will argue that the LT1 has more low-end torque, but I've never seen a stock LT1 dyno graph to be able to personally argue that point.

Here's another idea for the replacement speakers - try a local salvage yard. You might be able to find a good used speaker, but be careful b/c the one you get from the salvage yard might be blown too.

In general if you need used (salvage) parts for ANY car, you can try car-part.com. This website has like 41 million car parts. The parts come from salvage yards all over the country and they will ship to you. I checked for speakers, but they do not list that catagory of parts on the web site.

I would check the "For Sale" forum for the speakers... I always see people selling them ( i sold mine there a while ago ). If there aren't any there at the moment, try the For Sale forum at CamaroV6.com.
