Brand New Ss Break In

I am just curious when I should change the oil in the new SS. Just wait till the 3000kms mark or no?? And when is it ok to put synthetic in?? I think it has synthetic in it right now but I am not 100% sure. Thanks

Some 2001 & All 2002 LS1's came with synthetic from the factory. I changed mine at 500 miles.....

I've heard that, I'm sure most people have too but I've never seen any facts from GM stating that some, all or any '01-'02 LS1 F-Bodies came with synthetic from the factory. I personally didn't care because I was going to change mine at 500 miles either way (and I did).

Jeff Yashin, lead engineer at SLP was the one who posted about the Mobil 1 fill for the factory...

Oil Change

I changed my oil at 160 miles with Mobil 1. And from the looks of the oil, it was worth it. The oil came out with lots of metal particles and I can even feel it when I run my fingers across the oil. And at 500 miles I changed it again. But this time it was very clean with almost no contaminant. Don't know if anyone else had this experience.

I don't know too much about cars but one thing i do know is about break in. You DO NOT WANT synthetic oil in your car for the break in period... it jubercates too well and does not allow the engine to break in properly. In order for the rings to seat properly you want to use regualr old motor oil, and change it freguently due to the metal that comes out of a new engine. opposed to what your manual says you dont want to keep it at low rpms... but on the other hand you dont want to mash it to the floor every 2 seconds.. to seat the rings properly you want to vary your rpm range while you drive from say 1500 to 3000 to 2000 to 3500, etc, but mashing to gas to get to that rpm range is bad as well.. another good tip for breaking in your engine if you have a m6 is to let the engine slow the car down rather then the brake. My father used to be a mechanic and race pro-stock and this is one of the things we talked about in detail.
personally I changed my car to motor oil as soon as I got it. changed it at 500 miles then at 1000 then at 1900 then went to synthetic at 3200.. also, I would recomend leaving the car stock til you fully break it in, then go mod-happy.

I changed mine at 1000 miles with synthetic. Everybody has a different opinion and method. Some will start driving there car harder after 500 and some 1000 while others won't drive it hard at all until 3000+ miles. I would like to see some proof on what's the best way to break a new car in.

Talking More opinions !!

I am a firm believer in the change @ 500 miles policy.

I also believe that you should wait 'til 5K before putting the synthetic in to allow for a complete engine break in.

Now, having said that, I will also say that since Corvettes come factory filled with Mobil 1 5W30 it must not be all that bad to start w/ synthethic earlier than 5K.

Good Luck deciphering this mess !!

yep, you will have to decide from yourself as there are as many opinions on the subject as there are people to give them. For me, I changed at 500 Miles with Mobil1 and followed the break-in procedure in the manual. Good luck!
