So I would agree with your track findings. But its not just about airflow, its also about the way the air flows and the quantity of air. I just happen to think, based on my tests, that the paper filter provides the best conditions compared to the cotton gauze media or the foam media.
Okay, please explain this...
on pretty much every other board I have been a member of.... they swear by filters such as K&N and the Holley PS. Why all of a sudden are they power robbing devices?? I have been under the impression that they did flow better, and helped things out a bit over a paper filter.
Besides, for some reason in the '92 it helped out a noticable amount. Would I not see a difference in the LS1?

well, here is what I know..
On my friends L98 he was able to get better 1/4 mile times with his filters removed.
On LS1's that doesnt seem to be a good idea.
On my LS1, at the dyno, I was getting more power with the paper filter and was remaining consistantly lower with the aftermarket K&N and Amsoil.. even no filter gave me the same as the aftermarket.
This was repeated leaving the car stock, then with adding a lid.
To each their own, but some of us have found justification for our decisions.
I used to use K&N filters blindly but have found that I would rather test every mod first then decide if it will stay as a part of my car.. Expensive? Sure... but is it not more expensive to make your car slower with a mod and continually keep trying to make it faster or more powerful?

Ok.....
So, does anyone know why no filter would prove to be a performance killer?
That would lead me to believe that either the air pattern gets so screwed up that less air is going in... or that more air into the intake is a bad thing, in which case the FIPK, and the lids should not work well at all.
Were your tests run with an aftermarket lid or the stock lid?

my tests were run with both.. multiple times and on different days.. the same test was repeated. the time btw runs was the least possible. no cool down time.
