Better year LS1?

I'm gonna try and pick up an Z28 in a couple months here used b/c the dealers seem to want WAY too much IMO for new ones. I'm looking for a 99 or 00 b/c I've heard that 98s had lots of problems with em. What was specifically wrong with them? Is there a better year b/ 99 and 00? I'm gonna start modding it as soon as I get it (lightly) if it matters. I have a 93 z28 now and I had quite a few probs with it (not selling it tho).

Thanks for any advice.

Pick up an 01 or 02 because they have the Z06 intake and no egr. That will save you some money in the long run.

Re: Better year LS1?

I think you'll get a good car no matter what year it is.

I wanted a '99 because I've always had skepticism about first year models. I know '98s are reliable, that's just the way I was. I didn't wan't a '00 or above because most of the Z28s had those ugly 10-spoke "salad-shooter" rims.

The '99 and '00 are identical for HP/TQ numbers, and the only major difference I can think of are the rims I talked about.

Just look for the best deal, right now a '98 Z28 should go for around $13,000.

I have a 01 but I would recomend an 02 if possible . It seems that for some reason they are dynoing even higher than the 01`s . But the 01-02 cars both have the better intake and exhaust manifolds over the other years.

Any year you get you will be running strong.

Good luck on your purchese

Yeah, stay away from '98s..they're slow and they just fall apart on you. A TON of problems.

WTF? Who starts this crap? Exactly what is this based on?

I hope everyone who believes this stuff does stay away from '98s..that will leave more of them for the people that deserve fast cars. Gearheads know what's up.

If I'm not mistaken, the 00's + have a liitle more power than the 98's and 99's. They have a little more than 300 Hp while many 98's and 99's dyno a little less than 300. I have a 99 and it has no problems except for a squeaky belt which has seem to have fixed itself

I hear piston slap is a common problem but I got lucky and mine doesn't have any (knock on wood) Good luck!

Couldn't agree with you more. Let me count how many major problems I've had with mine .... 0!!! Another flaw in that way of thinking .. The LS1 was put into 97 C5's .. a year following in 1998 into Z28's .. Further reason to not be 'afraid' of buying a 98.

That's why I asked here instead of assuming jackhole.

If I had known more, I prolly would have gotten a 95 instead of a 93 so that's why I asked about the 98. If they're reliable, then I'll jump on one of those fast. I've seen em pretty cheap.

What kind of distributor does the LS1 have? I've heard they have a much better system than the opti garbage I've got.

93 had an enormous amount of recalls but 98 wasn't exactly a major design and after that, I'm kind of wary about first model years.

no problems yet, I say get a car that you like, dont listen to anyone with OPINIONS. As for hp tq ratings, they vary, you cant sincerely base hp ratings on the year besides the o1-02 bcuz of the intake, but if your getting one of these cars I doubt $400 is goign to be a big deal.

HOPe this helps.

OK..I was a bit brash. My message isn't to you..it's to the people that told you that '98s have a lot of problems. It's also to the people that told that to the others who have been posting this over the last few weeks.

All of a sudden, '98s are problematic and even "slow"? WTF? It wasn't like that in '98, '99, and '00.

But now it's '03 and '98s are "old cars"

woooo...oh no! there must be something wrong with them. Now I know how LT1 people felt in '98.

Gee, the only problem I have with my 98 SS is that I whipped every other LS1 in town, and nobody wants to race me anymore.

Next time you bash on a 98 you better get some facts. It had more horsepower then the Corvette. Hot Rod magazine did a dyno test and the Fbody dyno'd 1HP more then the Corvette for 1998. The Corvette people all screamed foul, and in 99 they put smaller injectors and "detuned" the Fbody to keep the Vette buyers happy. And you think that later years are better??

This is a silly discussion. All LS1's are awesome. I would just drop this thread..

This wasn't supposed to be a bash on the LS1. Ive never heard anyone call an LS1 slow (except moron ppl w/ mustang GTs talking about the overpriced cobra). If 98s are fine, it's awesome b/c they arent too expensive. There are a few dealers here that still have "new" '02s and want about 30-32k for em. Wonder why they still have em? Very few used LS1s, prolly gonna have to go to chi town for one

Buy a cheaper 98-00 and do the LS-6 intake and PCV mod....that will bring you up to the 01-02 for alot less....otherwise all LS1's are ...just some very minor differences

Good luck
