Back to the dealer for some service
My 2002 M6 Z28 is at the dealer to get the following problems fixed. It has 11,400 miles on it.
1. The tranny either won't shift or is difficult to shift into 1st and Reverse from a stop.
2. In neutral if you rev the engine, the tach doesn't respond until the engine is already high in the revs.
3. The rear end is weeping fluid on the drivers side where the tube is press fit into the housing.
4. I can feel the rotors starting to warp.
I did a search on these problems prior to going to the dealership so I would be a little more informed just in case. The first thing they are doing is pulling the tranny to check the synchros. I saw in one of the posts that the latest model M6 trannys have paper synchros. Is this true? Are they any good? Is there a better alternative? What about a steel shift fork? - saw that in another post as well. Should I have some of those put in too? Any advice/comments on the problems I'm having? Thanks in advance.

The dealership isn't going to upgrade anything on the car they will just TRY and fix the trans problem with the same parts that are failing. You would have to take it a performance shop and have them upgrade the trans. Having trouble getting into 1st and reverse is a common problem with most stick cars. Try to put the car into 1st while it's rolling and when shifting into reverse you should first shift into fouth or sixth gear and then into reverse. Yes I have heard lots of problems about the m6 trans in the 2001-2002 models which have the tremec trans instead of the beafer borgwarner. Lots of owners have had the dealership replace the synchros 2-4 times only to have the problems come back again until the dealership replaces the whole tranny. Some of the problems are in the clutch. Warped rotors seem a very common thing also. My service manager said to upgrade to some better rotors when mine get warped. Autozone has rotors for only $30 a piece I've heard that they are 100 times better than the OEM's. Baer makes some great rotors for around 60-70$ I believe also. Good luck.
Dealers are stupid......they'll replace failing parts with the same crappy parts and people end up coming back 3 or 4 times, like for rotors which warp commonly. In the long run itd be cheaper for them to put an better rotor on there. But thats just how things work at the dealerships.
The trans being difficult to shift to 1st or reverse, seems to be a typical problem, the dealer probably won't do a thing about it.
The tach, they should fix that no problem, you might want to show them what it does, so they know what to look for.
Rear end weeping, make sure they fix it, not just slap some RTV or JB weld on it and call it good.
Rotors stating to warp, they'll just turn them, and they'll probably end up warping again, only the next time they'll replace them, and charge you for them, because they're a "wear item"
Sorry if this comes across as somewhat cynical, but I've had more problems with dealership service departments, than I care to mention.

So if the synchros are failing because they are an inferior piece compared to the BW internals, could they put in the BW synchros to fix the problem? Are the BW and Tremec parts interchangable?
