I want to add gears to the rear. I want to go with 3.73's... does anyone know a decent price to get them installed? How much do they usually charge? Also, should I buy anything else with the gears or just the gears should be good?

For those of you that have 3.73's, how did you like the switch? was it an immediate kick you back in the pants feeling? I have an 01 SS M6, but i'm not sure what my ratio is now... whatever stock is. it feels kinda sluggish, maybe 3.73 will wake it up.

 

if your car has stock gears, they should be 3.42's. if you get the 3.73's then you should really feel the difference, but w/ an m6, you might want to think about 4.10's.

the LOWEST price i hve ever seen to install gears in $200, and thats just because it is my friends cousin, most places are around $350 to $400.

I've read threads on the differences between 3.73's and 4.10's, but they were talkin about auto cars, not M6's. What are the pros/cons of a 4.10 package? Also, should i just buy the gear set (299) and speed module (150) or should i buy a whole kit with an upgraded LSD and aluminum axle cover as well? (750)I dont want anything I dont need to go faster. Im on a budget too.

if you decide that you want 3.73's, i will sell you some Richmond 3.73's, brand new, still in the original box for $230 + shipping.

 

I would steer away from the alum differential covers like the TA and such that preload. Appearantly its common for them to leak a bit.. I would of gotten one, but once I found out that some leak and that it is considered common I decided against it.

Typically, when you get gears, you want the ring and pinion, bearings, shim kit, and to recalibrate your car computer so your speedo is kewl... As for the gears, whats your style? You a top end highway runner or a light to light driver? 4.10 will lower your top speed but you will get there quicker... 3.73 will have a high top speed but you wont accel as fast as the 4.10..

Make sure the place you take them to is known for doing good gear installs. You dont want them whining on you all day..

I have an 02 and its pretty nice.. make sure you are not masking an issue if yours feels sluggish.. My 1995 was hell on peoples necks as it was a violent shifter.. It had 3.73's and a built tranny. With just 297rwtq and 270rwhp it was doing 4.6 0-60's... Very quick for what it had... but also very violent.. My stick is smoother if that says anything.. hehe

 

i think just for my 3.73's, it was around $350

 

I have 3.73's on my A4 and they are great. The only problem is i get zero traction from a stop, and sometimes when i floor it from 40, i still spin. If you can even call that a problem.

 

What should the top speed be on an LS1 with 4.10 gears anyway? Is it still over 130?

 

With a m6 I believe redline comes somewhere around 140 with 410s

I have a '98 Z, Auto and I had 4.10s in it. It was waaaaay to much. Doing WOT from a stand still, I would just spin deep into 3rd before I started moving. I even re-did most of my rear suspension to try and help hook up. Nothing helped. It was cool to say that I had 4.10s, but that was really the only cool thing about them. They were just too much.

I went with 3.73s (Got them (Torq-Lines) for $220 installed) and it was just like moving poetry in motion. Worked hand in hand with my new updated suspension mods. I have a HPP and I can adjust the shift points and firmness of the car. It works great.

I wish I would have done the swap sooner. I only had a few days to get used to them before I went to the track for my first time. I went very easy off the line until I hit 2nd, and then went WOT. My first run ever........and with the new installed gears, I went:

1/4: 13.605
MPH: 110.51


My mph supports mid 12's. With more launching practice, and more seat time with the new gears, I'm sure I would have pulled a 12 sec run my first time out.

I see gear installs around here fall between $150-500, depending on the shop or person doing it.

Luckily for me, I have a friend who does this stuff for fun, and installed the 3,73s in my Firebird for free(he also did the gears in my LT1 Camaro for free). But, going from 2.73s to 3.73s made a huge difference, and allowed me to break 12s with just the gears, lid/filter, and cutout. Not bad for a 98 A4

Anyways, you'd be better off going to 4.10s with your M6 since you have factory 3.42s. My 94Z was a M6, and I went from 3.42s to 3.73s. It was a bit noticeable, but not overly impressive. Had I done it again, I would have opted for the 4.10s. Also, my 3.73 geared Formula(see sig) still can get over 150, even though that's about 6000 RPMs in OD.

Like someone stated before, do you want accelleration or top-end? Also, do you plan on running a power adder on the car? With the M6 and a serious power adder, 4.10s may be too steep and allow the RPMs to climb so fast that you may not keep up with shifting.
