Any truth about series I and series II
Iam planning on buying a 98' t/a 72,367 miles for 12,000; from a used dealer in my area. My question is, if a aftermarket ls-6 intake is used(which does not have the egr provision) is it possible to remove the egr equipment and put in a newer ecm, from egr deleted years 01'/02'. I have heard that there is something about a series I data link 98'- 00'; and then a series II on the 01'/02'; and the two are not compataible even though they look the same; its about how the info is transfered back and forth.
Should I wait and get a newer model 01 ram air for 18,800.

Not sure about the ecm, but if you buy a 98, and you ever want to put heads on it, you will be stuck with perimeter style valve covers which will not allow you to upgrade to LS-6 without buying new covers. Some people don't even keep perimeters in stock, you have to send them yours to be ported. I'd at least get a 99, but the best would be 01-02.
I believe it is patriot performance that has an overstock of 98 perimeter heads and is selling them ported stage II for $995
with no core. There was a thread on LS1Tech.com about it in the internal engine section. Buy it and get these heads!

Look at the 8th post down by Terry Wilkes. He is the guy from Patriot.

So I guess the 98 99s are GMs red headed step childeren years. I thought all ls motors were center style holds, but never viewed an engine compartment from a 98-99 up closely, thanks for the heads up on future problems that could be costly.
It's no big deal to change 98 heads over to the 99 and up center bolt style. Buy a pair of used center bolt valve covers and a new coil mounting brackets and you're ready to go. Not a big deal. That's why you can buy the perimeter bolt heads so cheap....people are buying the center bolt heads for their 98s.
EGR can be deleted with LS1 Edit. My son deleted EGR on his 99 Z28 and is using a LS6 intake on it now. You can do the same on a 98.You can't switch computers from a 98 into any other year because the programing language is different but why would you ever want to?
Because I did not know that you could delete the egr part out of the computer system. After all, whats the whole point of up grading a 98 system to a ls6 system; heads and aftermarket intake if the only thing that is stoping you is an egr system, that can not work on the ls6 system.
