Hey guys about once a month my stupid low coolant light will come and go untill i pour some more antifreeze into the radiator to top it back off. Everytime i do this it seems the antifreeze is about 6-8 inches down from the top. I dont ever leave puddles anywhere and do not see any leaks anywhere either. Every once and a i can smell a slight antifreeze odor when i am sitting still for a while... Any ideas guys??? this is in a 99 ls1 with 110k miles and it runs very good, its got headers with exhaust and just yesterday ran 13.1 with a 2.3 60ft(lol) at 111mph.

 

head gasket would be my guess. check your oil, if its a milkshake then you might want to look at getting a new shortblock..

 

6-8 inches/month is a lot. If you can smell it hopefully it's not something internal. If the oil looks good see if you can get some dye to add to the coolant and look for leaks. Is the smell under the hood or inside the car? Heater core/water pump?

 

Ok just checked my oil and it looks perfect to me. on the hose that comes out of the driver side of the manifold where it goes in the metal tube it seems like the rubber tube is not on the metal as much as it should be. hopefully thats it...And maybe it is more like 4-5 inches.

 

Have a shop pressure check the cooling system. There could be a pin hole in a hose that only leaks under certain conditions.
I did this with a Corsica that had your same symptoms and they found a tiny hole in the underside of one of the hoses.
