alternator squeeling??

I have this squeeling sound coming from under my hood. I am pretty sure it is the alternator. Does this mean the alternator is going bad or does the pulley balance need to be oiled or what? It is really annoying.

Re: alternator squeeling??

it is one of 3 things...

old belt
bad alternator
bad tensioner pulley

belt is easy and cheap to rule out, and the alt can be tested at any autozone or pep boys. you can also try pulling the belt off and trying to wiggle the pulley. i've had one worn so bad that it moved when tugged on.

the tension pulley is a common problem, and i think about $50 to replace. you could try oiling it i suppose

Re: alternator squeeling??

teke, just recently replaced pullies with underdrives. Not pulley. Not tensioner. If you take alternator, and spin the thing, you hear a little chirp (I can't spin as fast as motor can). I think it's a bad bearing or something inside alternator. Must've gone bad from those 160+mph runs, LOL. I'll just have it tested and get new one. Does the job for now just squeels when I'm idling. Sounds like disc brakes that are dry, not lubricated. If I'm driving, no squeel. Just gotta keep foot on gas pedal.
