Air on at start up?
Hey yall,
So my dad's been telling me emphatically for YEARS to never ever start a car with the air running. Is this good advice? I can understand if the car's low on battery or some old junker, but on a newer, great running car, do you guys see the need? thanks!

That's a really good question, my dad has always told me the same thing. The only thing I do know for sure is that turning the air off when you get out of the car can't hurt it, so I listen to my Dad's advice, usually they know best anyway. Hell, better be safe than sorry, right?

my parents have always said the same thing so I turn mine off. It cant hurt it to turn it off. The only thing I can think of is that it release the pressure in the compressor or something. If you turn the car off and then turn the air off a few seconds later you can hear it.

It's just easier on the engine. When you first start your engine everything is cold the oil is in the bottom of the pan etc. If you have all your accessories on it just pulls more load on the engine when it's trying to get warmed up and going. My startup procedure is this:
I turn off all my AC and accessories, then I turn the key to on and listen for the fuel pump to pressurize the rail. Then I start the car, I let the oil pressure come up and I usually let the car idle for 30 sec or so. Then I drive it easy, keeping the RPM's under 2500 until the engine has been in operating range for 5-10 min.
