air intake box

hey guys... i was messin around with my camaro today.. and noticed the stock air box has about a 1/2" or 3/4" slit along the bottom for the air to enter the engine.... my question is... how can just putting a new lid on increase this... or does it come with a new bottom part too? it looks kinda restrictive to me... do u guys know what i'm talking about? i dono.. just a thought... also... i know most of the abbreviations but can't for the life remember what "SOTP" means... correct me if i'm wrong about that.....

ohhh.. the other thing.. is one synthetic oil any better than another? i'm partial to valvoline.... but i've heard mobil 1 is the way to go... sorry for making this so long.. just a couple questions

OHHH... another thing came to mind... while reading on the exhaust questions.... do the stock z28 tips.. the wide rectanglular ones cause a restriction... at some point i'm going to get a new exhaust and really like the looks of my stock tips... i don't really care that much about performance... but more interested in sound.. and will prolly get the SLP loud mouth
and wana know if my stock tips will even fit. just a thought.

The lids don't increase the opening slit size but are bigger and don't have the fins on the under side. People usually gain a couple hp by getting rid of the stock lid.

I don't know if any synthetic is better then another, but synthetics are definately better then dino oil.

I am unsure about the exhaust tips.

The stock Z28 tips are offset for the factory exhaust (it sits to the left) the most aftermarket systems have bends in the tail pipes to make up for the difference rather than making offset tips.

As for restriction the factory tail's are 2.25 and most cat backs are 2.50 so you will need to use reducers.

The reason for the 10-15hp gains with a lid are because the stock lid has fins on the underside which creates turbulence as well as the silencer (the big part on the back of the lid). Look inside and you will see what we are talking about. The aftermarket lids get rid of the silencer and are completely smooth. As for the restriction from the slit, you can do the free ram air mod. Look here http://www.installuniversity.com/ and go to the FREE RAM AIR MODIFICATION. Another option is the K&N FIPK which replaces the whole box (bottom and top) with an open air filter (but its expensive and most agree there is no gain over aftermarket lids.

SOTP = Seat Of The Pants. Means you could feel the difference.

I use Mobil 1

Use whichever exhaust tips you like. Like was said before, somebody makes polished factory style z28 tips or if you like the black use them but like CODY BEHNKE said you will need reducers.

EDIT: The ram air kits (fast toys ram air, super sucker ram air, I think slp sells one) are good but I have heard of a few people who have hydro locked their engine with these. The inlet is below the from air dam and when going thru a big puddle they have sucked water into the engine and "good by engine". 99% of the people never have a problem but at least one the companies provides a block off plate for use when driving in the rain so its enough of an issue to them. You have to get out and install the plate whenever it rains (if you choose to use it). Then again I know lots of people who have them and like them. Youre choice.

About the fins on the stock lid... couldn't somebody with a dremel just cut them off or grind them down? Of course you would still have the airbox silencer behind the lid, but I'm working on a way to run some kind of rubber or plastic from airbox straight to MAF and leaving out the silencer. I know it might sound kind of cheap, but most of my money goes to payments each month, so dosen't leave much room for Mods yet.

I have heard of people cutting the fins out but never actual talked to people that have done it. I think its pretty rare BUT it can be done. Its a lot of work but if you have time and not money go for it. Can't see how it would hurt. And as you mentioned the silncer is still there. It would give you a stock look if you are worried about warranty work (although any dealer that gives you grief about a box needs to have their head checked and i wouldn' want them working on my car anyway). If you do it let us know how it comes out.

i was looking at the ultra Z hood.. and noticed that it has cuts right about where the stock air box is... would this create a sort of ram air effect? just a thought...

and i agree with 02camaroguy1775... all my money goes to payments and can't afford mods just yet.. will be able to after income tax season so just gathering info right now.. cuz i wanna keep this car forever.. and want it to be my custom baby.
thanks again guys and gals.... (sorry.. have to be PC here :P)

It's not really rare it's just outdated. We all did it to our 98s before MTI introduced the first lid. And I took a $2 trans funnel, cut and squashed it to an oval to replace the silencer. It worked almost as well as a lid. As a matter of fact I still have it. Keeping it for nostalgic reasons.

Outstanding... you wouldn't happen to have pics of this would you? It would really help me out a lot. To be honest, I'm not really sure what a $2 trans funnel is. I'd like to just buy a lid, but can't justify spending $100 on it at this point in time. I'm actually scraping my pennies together right now to get a catback... gotta have priorities!
