AFR Heads w/ CC 224 cam 500+ hp?

in this magazine here at my work they claim 500+hp from the new AFR 2.02/1.60 heads with a comp cam 224 duration camshaft ONLY. is this possible to do a heads and cam swap on a stock motor and get these kind of gains? i would think u need more then this for that kinda gain, such as a lid and full exhasut with headers etc. plus a tune and so forth... And is this set up smog legal?????

thanks

I was just reading the description on their website (www.airflowresearch.com) and I'm pretty sure they mean flywheel horsepower. They were using an '01 SS as a base, so it already had an LS6 intake and I'd bet money it had headers too.

well, considering the stock heads they dyno tested, dynoed at 428 hp, i'm assuming it's flywheel horsepower. and if you look further down, the corrected hp number is more like 450

http://www.airflowresearch.com/dyno/ls1_030804.htm

oh, and corrected, their stock heads dynoed at just over 400.

The comp 224 can pass smog if cut on a 114 and a good tune. These guys are deffinatlly talking FWHP. LG motorsports did a test with their G5X-3 cam and these heads which netted 470-480 RWHP. They should be good heads, but I'd wait till a few more real world tests have been done/

Read up on ls1tech.com. These are rwhp number, according to an employee of AFR. The heads also made 409rwhp on a z06 with the only other mods being like a catback or something. I forget the specifics, but it made 409rwhp with stock cam, manifolds, etc.

Downright insane, if you ask me. But then again, I made 428rwhp with stock heads through a 12 bolt.. Wonder what I'd make with my pistons flycut and some AFRS !!!!

uhm, i thought zo6s made 405 flywheel horsepower stock? and you know how GM under-rates their engines, and even if that is correct, 15 percent drivetrain loss is ~340 rwhp, which would mean these heads + a catback yeilded a gain of 69 horsepower.

however, it would also mean a zo6 only makes 30-35 more horsepower than a LS1 camaro.

eitherway, a link to this thread would be nice.
