affects of degreeing a cam

did a little dyno testing with my cam today. originally put it in straight up. cam peaked a little soon. so, i retarded the cam 5* to make it 0*. (cam has 5* advance ground into it).

not a good thing to do. this just goes to show that you need to make sure it's installed correctly, or you can lose alot.

blue = straight up
red = retarded

A 232/240 .550" lift cam ground on a 117 LSA isn't exactly an NA cam for a 408ci LS1 to start with. This just proves that you can't bandaid a setup if it isn't right for to begin with.

Built LS1s like lots of compression (11.8-12.5:1), tight quench, a decent amount of duration (high 230s minimum...my buddy has a 239/242 in his 383 speced by Futral), .600+ lift, 110-112 LSA, and lots of intake runner volume (only LS6 heads or aftermarket castings).

Unfortunately your setup lacks much of this, so the NA power is going to suffer.

you're missing the point of my post. it pays to make sure your cam is degree'ed in correctly, or you stand to lose out. that's all. nothing more.

Avanceing cam timing will raise hp and shorten powerband with some low end tq loss also increase overlap.Retarding will broadin tq cruve and a more streetable powerband (im a motorcycle mechanic though) and watch valve to piston clearance with advace

Overlap is built into the cam. Advancing or retarding the cam can't change overlap.
