hmmm look for signs of mods.. stripped bolt heads..
holes in the firewall.. little stuff..

my car and a few others had a rear pinion seal leak.. so watch the back..

other than that with those miles and the age of the car you can get a GM extended warranty for it.. I wouldnt suggest any other... They all seem to go bankrupt.

Also look around in the engine bay if you see greasy finger prints around the heads and so on......and look to see if there are spots that are really clean that shouldnt be as clean as they should be. I try to keep my engine bay clean but it's hard to get to most spots without removing things to get to them. As for the piston slap issue you should let the car run for about 1to2min and then listen for a clacking sound, you can hear it better down buy the wheel well or under the car, this helps reduce other noises going on in and around the motor, ex- AIR pump, injecters, valvetrain and so on. Good luck!!!! you will love the power

Well HoustonZ you a lucky man No they don't all do it SO IT'S NOT NORMAL!!!! (not yelling at you, some people stick up for GM and say it's normal ) I have a terrible case of it and it just seems to keep getting louder and lasting longer the more miles I put on (only 10,000mi)

stick up for GM and dont bother with an extended warranty. Their original is a rip off so im guessin the extended must be 500x worse.

Well I have not had any prob.s with mine other than the rear end it had to be replaced at 32,000 mi. it just mad a ticking noise at a slow right turn or was it left . well anyways gm told me it was normal so after the 3rd time i talked to the shop manager and told him to either fix it or ill call the gm factory so they replaced the rear end turns out the gears wore for some unknown reason

Well Whobetter? If it's a myth why so they have a web site deticated to www.pistonslap.com Why are they replacing pistons and motors?? And also extending warrantes (they extended mine) and buying back cars that people don't want due to this. You have plenty of posts so i'm shure you have seen this a few times, it's nothing new to any of these boards. Out of all these f-bodys you have drove how many of these did you stop to listen for this?? I checked into this myself one day at a local dealership that had 7 used f-bodys I told the salesman that I was thinking of buying another f-body but I wanted to listen to all the motors b4 I bought one.........so 4 out of the 7 had it, but 2 of them had LS6 blocks that are pretty much known not to have PS, so only 1 with the LS1 block didn't have it but that was a '98 also known for not having PS the rest were '01-'02's these years know for having the highest # of cases. I'm not trying to start a huge war here I am just trying to educate some of these new guys on what is going on.

I hate to burst your bubble but the piston slap is a real problem. It isn't that severe in most cases but it does exist. I have a slight piston slap at startup but once the engine warms up it goes away. I'm not too concerned about it because what usually causes it is the short skirt pistons and the taper on it gm used and the reason it stops after the engine warms up is because of the different thermal rates of expansions between the cylinder bore and the piston.

However some instances the tolerances are off in the engine causing severe piston slap. I read a thread on this forum where a guy had his entire short block replaced because his was so severe.

Just because you haven't heard it doesnt mean it isnt there.

Don't disbelieve everything just because it is on the internet. Why would people lie about something like that. Also I just said I have piston slap on my car and wisomws6 said he has heard it so why can't you just shut up and disagree instead of saying it doesn't exist and insulting people.

Well when I bought the car to be honest I didn't really know that much about the whole PS issue,I did start the car and listen for it and like most others I didn't hear it, but around 600mi it started slapping lightly and has gotten worse with time. I'm not going to spend an hour quoting all your posts, but I do have a few replies to some of what you said....I don't believe most stuff on the net that is why I went out and looked for myself (read my post) Yes GM sells a bunch of vehicles and yes they will have a ton of warranty claims(most of them the don't fix at all they will BS their wat out of it..been there done that) and other companies will to(mostly little stuff) but how many will have to replace motors-pistons on a TON of vehicles (this is not only an f-body problem by far) You need to take off the brand loyalty blinders off and realise that GM does have a bit of a problem on their hands, but they choose to try and sweep it under the rug and in the mean time lose consumers. You sound like you work for GM and you come off as a ***** just be looking at your screen name, what are you trying to prove with that??(sorry I had to drop down to your level and insult you but hey you started it..lol)One again lose the blinders and see about 75% of folks believe that this is a real problem. Have a good one
