piston slap and trashed rear end gears are the biggest things

What exactly is piston slap and how loud is it? My 2002 taps lightly on and off and I was told by several people it's nothing to worry about but if it's serious I'll take it in to the dealer. The engine runs fine though.

Thumbs up

www.pistonslap.com

Nothing to be too concerned about.

Leaking pinion seal and faulty window motors are a couple of other common issues with these cars. Again, pretty minor issues.

LS1's have proven to be quite tough and don't have too many issues.

Happy hunting!

Yeah, buy it from some old guy, they all take better care of their stuff and are less likely to beat on it

Also, look at the tires. Tires are expensive for these cars. If the previous owner took care of it, it will have good tires, all matching, evenly worn(no new fronts and bald back ones ) name brand, good ride, tracks straight.

When looking for my Camaro, I drove 5 different cars with crappy tires.

Not necessarily true. The resale value can be affected greatly. Given the choice between two identical cars, are you going to buy the one with the slap or the one without it? Another good site for the piston slap issue is www.gmproblems.com

I'd look for an 01/02. They have the LS6 intake and no EGR. If it's an A4 look for RPO code GU5 on the driver's door for - 3.23 gears and alum driveshaft.

My wife and I just got a 2002 Camaro SS and it slaps occasionally when it is cold but goes away once it starts to warm up... *shrug* I am not too worried about it as the previous owner I think used 87 octane in it and when we got it the first tank of gas it pinged a little and that has gone away since we starded filling only with 91 premium (which isn not cheap in CA)...

Someone told me that 99's have a problem with the front main seals going bad and causing problems when they are modded. Is this true.
