'99 WS6 first mods
'99 WS6 first mods
I just bought one and since I haven't paid much attention to the LS1 engines in the past I'm kinda behind the curve. What are some good mods to start off on a bone stock car?
thanks
thanks

Re: '99 WS6 first mods
Best first mod I've heard of that'll give you the best SOTP feal is a stall converter. If you're going to go that route, you might as well get a shift-kit and tranny cooler too. They don't add too much to the price tag.
Re: '99 WS6 first mods
Since it already has Ram Air I thought that was it as far as the intake was concerned. Who makes high flow intakes for them? I also saw an intake bellows a few diff. places, but I wasn't sure if it would work on a WS6.

Re: '99 WS6 first mods
agreed...get a lid.
any lid will produce good results, none have a distinct advantage. get one you like the look of and can afford.
forget the bellows
a catback would be next, but if you like the sound of the current exhaust just install an electric cutout.
next would probably be some "big ticket" items like headers or a stall converter.
read the first 5 pages of LS1 forum and you'll learn TONS

Do NOT forget about suspension. Get a pair of sub-frame connectors on there too. Not only will it give the car a more solid feel, but they also help with traction.
I say get a lid, cutout, SFC's, free mods, then save up for a stall. Get at least a 3500. Mine's a 3800 and it's PERFECT for the street

Re: '99 WS6 first mods
What do these electric cutouts run? I drive this car every day & if I want loud I'll drive my IROC.
Anyone heard of this BG ram air kit? Is it worth the $300 or so it costs? The only thing that worries me is sucking water into the engine or cooking the MAF from too much moisture.
Who has the best SFCs? I can tell this car needs 'em bad just from pulling out into traffic over parking lot bumps.
There's a local guy selling a 3500 stall lockup converter, but isn't that a little much for a mostly stock car?
I need a programmer or something too b/c the temp gauge is planted on 210deg.
I know there are some edit programs out there, but hell I still haven't even gotten around to dialing in the DFI on my IROC.
thanks for the replies so far!

They are all good. The style of driving that you do should determine what sub will suit you the best. Daimond for RR and autocross. Square or rectangular tubular for rough roads/spirited driving style. Light weight round tubular for drag racing.
No, 3500 is fine for a stock LS1.
Temp gage on any 99-up f-body is an idiot gage. Shows 210 for all temps from 175-220.
Re: '99 WS6 first mods
since you have the ram air already, the SSRA wouldn't be a primary concern.
but as suggested the SFC will make a nice difference. for just normal driving look into tubular (better clearance and cheaper) or boxed.
i have a bunch of pics of my BMR boxed SFC on page 3 of my website.

Re: '99 WS6 first mods
I have a 99 SS camaro just from the mods I have on my car and the ones on my friends F-body's this is what helped us the most.
Mods Stall (vigilante, midwest, and PT) I drive my car everyday I have 3600 and I love it
Headers ( we all have Coated JetHot LTs)
Lid(MTI,SLP, Texas speed and performance)
Catback(borla adjustable, every one else I know has an x-pipe with true duals) If you get true duals have the exhaust guy make the x as soon as possible after the long tubes
Gears(3.73 for the autos its really not bad on gas, you just want to keep your foot in it)
As far as suspension waht helped us the most were relocation brackets(weld ons)Lower control arms and best of all the torque arm.You can get an a air bag for $30 from thunder racing
Intakes( ls6 is good, fast intake is better)
Good luck you really have to many choices
