63K on factory spark plugs. Time for a change?

Well, my 99 Z28 now has 63K miles and still runs like a raped ape. I bought the car with 41K on it, and have never changed the plugs. As far as I know its still running on the orginals. I know the sparkplugs are a pita to change, so I'll let my mechanic do it. I don't want to get them changed only to find out the orginal ones were fine though.

Now if I do change them, do you have a preferred brand? All I do is drive this car on the street, and an occasional trip to the strip. My only mods are the SLP ram air kit and a Magnaflow exhaust.

If those are your original plugs....CHANGE THEM NOW!!!

I know many people who have had plugs not last them till 40K miles.

Also, its really not that difficult to change the plugs, I wouldn't pay somebody else to do it....just try it yourself, and you should be alright. You'll save a lot of $$$ that way.

Most people on here will tell you to use NGK TR55 plugs...thats what I have in my car as well. Hope that helps.

Or maybe it was on LT1 cars the plugs were a PITA to change

Now which way is easier, to get the plugs from underneath or from above? I'm thinking it would be impossible to get the back two from up above.

You can get them all from above but I usually get #8 from the bottom. Removing coil packs makes it much easier.

Change them, it won't hurt.

My GM Master Tech. recommended the factory Delco plugs and a wire of my choice for a mildy modded car, like mine, so that's what I went with. I put MSD 8.5mm SuperConductors in there too. I changed mine with about 71,000 miles on my car and they didn't look that bad.

I was just checking your sig., that must be one sharp looking car.

no, the plugs are still a pain to change on LS1 cars, but much easier than LT1 cars. especially if you're running headers.

Thanks, and I have the factory chrome rims too. Try changing your black lug nut covers to chrome ones, it makes the rims look much cleaner IMO.

Now, back on subject. I'll go with the NGK TR55 plugs and I might as well change the wires too while I'm at it. So what shoud I gap the plugs to?

Factory spec is .060 but .050 works really well with the NGKs. Got them in both of the LS1s.

With my 2000 SS, I changed the plugs after every 20k miles. The OEM plugs were gapped very inconsitantly, they were gapped .050 to .070.

I've been using NGK TR55 plugs gapped to .055.

This may sound dumb but wouldnt you want to change the coil packs too? Since on a reg tune up for a car with a dist you change the cap and rotor to keep the spark level optimal. I would just figure that over time those coil packs are loseing there out put and would need to be replaced at some point. I have 77k on my car and i havent changed the plugs yet But i was planning to do a tune up this spring when it comes out of storage.

I have a 99 camaro SS and I have used delcos and the iridium NGKs both great, as far as wires I went with thunder racing 10.? wires every thing runs awesome. Ow and about those coil packs man the earliest I have ever heard of a GM COIL Pack going out on an F-body is around 150000 miles.
