98 LS1 Surpise Shutdown...

Gentlemen..
I've had this car about 5 months problem free until yesterday. While on an easy acceleration she lost all electrics for about 1/2 second. The 'security' and the 'airbag' light came on momentarily, also. I u-turned straight back to the driveway (1/4 mile) just in case. With the engine idleing and in nuetral (M6), I turned on the aux radiator fans and she died like someone hit her with a hammer. Dead. No electrics. Somehow she lost the ground (appearantly) because even the radio memories were wiped out. Although they didn't seem that loose, I tightened the battery terminals and pushed down on all relays under the hood to check for looseness. They all seemed fine. Is there another ground location somewhere to check or does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks in advance...

Every time that's happened to me it's been the alternator.

Okay. I'll check it. I did remove the battery, cleaned all the terminals to confirm a good connection, then removed and cleaned the contacts on all the high amperage fuses (which a few had some minor corrosion on the tabs). When you say it was your alternator, was something loose or did it die altogether? After doing the above cleaning on mine, so far, she's purring again (he says with crossed fingers!).

i had a very similar problem on my 95 LT1. i figured it was the alternator. however, it was just because my battery is bad. i am not sure why it did this with a bad battery but it did. i replaced the battery like the shop said and never had a problem again. however, i would check the battery and alternator. i have a feeling one of these is your problem.

I seriously doubt the alternator is bad. When it goes its a slow decline to the final everything dead. Id check all my fuses and make sure there isnt anything thing running from them that isnt supposed to be. I had the same problem with my 97 Blazer. It was after I ran some strobes off an ACC from my fuse box. Blew through a fusible link somewhere so I ran a wire from another fuse and traded that bad boy off for my Camaro!! Also keep in mind that the entire car is one big circuit. There are grounds off the battery onto the fender, I believe, and one off the back of the block tpyically that mounts to the firewall. Id check wiring fore I placed the blame on the alternator. Either way GL!!

I had the exact same thing happen to me. It turned out to be the ground stud that is on top of the driver's side fender had come loose. I was using it for a ground for my fuel pressure saftey switch and it had come loose.

I had that happen too, and heres what the problem was. The negative battery terminal stud on the car side with the rubber surrounding around it has a washer with some points that help with the connection. for some reason my washer thing doesnt work, so i put another washer around the stud to help out and it worked great. Before i fixed it i could turn the ignition on and everything was cool, but the second i went to turn it over, it was totally dead.
Hope that helps.
