'98 camaro 6spd I can't shift for crap!

Just got my black '98 camaro z28 6spd, 116k on it. has t-tops white leather, 18" aftermarket wheels, flowmaster exhaust which isnt nearly loud enough and will be tossed next spring. Anways i bought it and i plan on storing it away for the winter already but i cant help myself and i take it out for a quick run or two down the road. i "try to do a few almost full throttle runs and i cant even get her past 2nd without reving it, i just suck at shifting. I had a '95 camaro z28 but that was a auto soo i'm use to that. It takes me almost 2 mins to get into reverse, the 6speed is all new too me, but i always wanted a t-56 equipped fbody.

Soo what should my first mods be ? shift eliminator ? or should i get one of those basic mail order tunes ? I'm the type the will still stick to a mail order tune even if i have heads cam full bolt ons, i understand i wont get the full 100% potentiel out of the mods but for one i dont understand and wont try to understand tunning it myself, and i live in a state where nobody around does tunning and i dont like to travel. I'm new to ls1's and 6 speeds. I know 4.10's and drag radials will be in the near future. Do these ls1's have cai's ? The airbox system looks like a ram air design. ohh and i was thinking about getting one of those shifter kits, like the hurst kit?, i guess its lower and it improves shifting soo i wont miss a gear as often and i love the classic white hurst ball.

drill mod & bleed the hydraulics for the clutch for starters.

3.90 gears

why 3.90 over 4.10's ? personal pref? i'm guessing more traction with drag rads of course and alittle bit easier on the rear end.

theres a trick to go into reverse, at least for mine. if it wont go in on the first try, try putting it in first, then take it out and go in reverse. works every time for me. i dont even bother trying reverse without going thru first anymore.

1st mod you should get is a friend who can teach you how to drive. Please slow down trying to be a race car driver or you'll smoke that clutch in a hurry. Shift eliminator is good, I haven't done the drill mod yet but after my 2nd stage 3 clutch I'm gonna do it. B&M shifter kit will make the car a lot more fun to drive.

well, since first and reverse arent on the same shaft, i dont think its synchros, but its probably input/output shafts. i think its kinda funny that first lines up reverse just right. i wonder if that was intentional. either way, it works, and im happy. lol

Don't bother with 3.90s. Whoever recommends them has quite obviously never had them

Yeah i have never hear people mention 3.90's only 4.10's for sticks.

I'm Just going to get a few things for this winter. SLP lid, Pro 5.0 shifter kit and LM2 catback. I think i'll go with the ceramic coated pacesetter longtubes and a cated y pipe if they make them this spring.

I've driven the 2.66 / .50 T56s with gears from 3.23 up to 4.11.
Based on stockish powerband, that's what I'd go with.

Re: '98 camaro 6spd I can't shift for crap!

i built my 99 z28 w/ ms4 cam and bolt ons and the spec stage 2 clutch and i was having problems with getting into gear... I bought a tick performance adjustable master cylinder and it works like a champ now...the stock master cylinder doenst have enough pressure and the tick works wonders especially if you plan on building it anyways that way you can adjust it later if need be
