98 A4...headers or stall

Hey Guys! I have a 98 SS pretty much stock. I have a SLP lid, Magnaflow cat-back and I just bought a set of slp headers. I was going to put the headers on then got to thinking they weren't for me. I like the way the car sounds now with just a catback. It's a daily driver and I'm worried it will be too loud with headers and ORY. I guess my question would be...has anyone put headers on and then decided they didn't like the way they sounded or affected the driveablity of the car? Would a stall be a better option for me to go with? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Mines an LT1 but I love what headers did for my car. Lots more power and a more demanding tone. If it gets too much for you throw a high flow cat in there. I say get the most from the internals you have now, then move to the stall.

boy that's a tough decision. you'll probably get more 1/4mi results out of the stall, than the headers.

and the magnaflow is a pretty free-flowing exhaust and sound LOUD with headers and orp. trust me i had it for a while.

you could always upgrade to a better muffler, like a dynomax or hooker aerochamber to tone it down a touch.

although the SLP headers are gonna suck when it comes to clearance

Torque converter. Absolutely the #1 best mod you can do for an A4 and I say do it first. Your car will be a solid half a second quicker in the 1/4 mile, you'll lose or at least vastly improve your dead spot (30-40mph punch) and the car will be a lot more fun to launch

Good luck

The car may sound better with headers, but you will have more fun with the converter and you will see more performance out of it as well. Not just at the track but on the street as well. A converter would be one of the first mods I would do.

I am going with exhaust first. I have my jet hot LT's just waiting for my hooker catback to come in. After that I will be getting TC.

Stall B4 headers. Well, that's what I plan to do. To each their own though.

Re: 98 A4...headers or stall

headers are already in. I have to do the coil-packs and new spark plugs, re-route a few wires and it's done. Something tells me I'm NOT gonna like this. As a daily driver I'm betting it'll be too loud. My biggest weakness...I'm too damn impatient and too indecisive. I think I need a Taurus or something that can't be modified so I'm not tempted....Will let you know what the headers are like.

well the headers are in and running...thanks elec87, you're the man. So far there not as loud as I was thinking. I still need the tuning and o2's hooked up but as is it sounds pretty good. Teke was right, it's loud at WOT but pretty tame at idle. I'm gonna let it sink in over the next few days.

Re: 98 A4...headers or stall

The headers are well built and have no clearance issues so far. The only issues was getting that damn passenger side to fit in, If we would have just dropped the k member (10 minutes) a little we would have saved 3 hours time.

It's nice a tame at idle but gets naughty sounding at full throttle.

you'll notice a little bit better fuel mileage with headers also, and i can't say the same for a stall converter

Re: 98 A4...headers or stall

I love 'em...Who ever bitches about ground clearance from SLP headers is a weird-o. Yeah I lost a little, but I would have to drive like an idiot or ramp a good size speed bump to do any damage. My wife won't ride in the car with me anymore (not really a bad thing) because can be a little loud but I've gotten soooo many compliments on the way this thing sounds so far. Perhaps a stall in the future but I'm happy for now!
