98-99 00-02 power difference?

Is there a difference in power between the 98-99 ls1 and the 00-02 ls1? If you order headers why are they different for the 00-02 then 98-99?

They got rid of the EGR system in 2000. In '01/'02, they also started using the LS6 intake manifold and a slightly different camshaft (less lift, but altered duration). At the end of the day, ALL LS1's are within a few HP +/- of each other. Mine's an '02 and dyno'd 289 HP at the wheels, while others (typically M6's) have dyno'd upwards of ~320 at the wheels stock! There is, on average, a tendancy for '01/'02 cars to dyno a little higher than '98-'00, but that's because of the intake/cam change.

However, no matter how you look at it, an LS1 is an LS1 ... they kick a$$.

dont your gears make your dyno less?

I'm pretty sure gears don't change your HP at all.. it just makes the engine able to work a little easier

98's had a different ECM and injectors.
From just reading camaro boards all day I noticed they seem to actually be a little faster then the 99's on average.

Yeah, the 98's used 28lb injectors, 99+ all used 26lb AFAIK.

I've read more than once where people claim that low gear ratios "kill" dyno #'s, but I think that's more of a myth than fact? Stalls absolutely kill the #'s, but gears? Nah.

Just do the math (let's figure ~15% loss for my auto) ---

289 RWHP / .85 = 340 flywheel HP (not far off, but what if there's more loss?)

289 RWHP / .82 = 352 flywheel HP (using 18% loss, that looks good )

Really, how much power does a lid and a Flowmaster (a.k.a. "Choke-master") really add? I'm satisfied to say my LS1 is making a true 350 HP.

They got rid of EGR in 2001 with the LS6 intake, not 2000

Correct.

Also, going with a lower gear, which is numerically a higher gear, to keep some of you from getting confused (i.e. 4.11s are a lower gear than a 3.23), there is typically a slight loss in power to the wheels on the dyno. I would hardly say gears kill dyno numbers though.

If you were to test drive well-maintained LS1s ranging from '98-'02 without knowing their model years beforehand, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference in performance.

01s and 02s WILL dyno slightly higher if you look at average power numbers given each model. There is a reason the LS6 intake manifold is favored over the LS1 manifold. The 01s and 02s did get a truck cam grind, but the LS6 intake manifold more than makes up for the power the came may cost.

I can't offer any proof as to how it happens sadly, but I do know it's not a myth. Steeper gears will take power away on the dyno.

Steeper gears more than make up for any hp they might consume at the wheels, but you are correct.
