98-00 vs. 01/02
With only a $99 lid I ran 8.8's and 8.7's in the 1/8th (about 13.5 in the 1/4) all night long, even in summer. So you should be set with ANY LS1 car.Keep in mind though,my elevation here is about 50ft.
Not too bad, especially with an auto. I am just so worred do to the fact of the 00 SS running 14.2's or whatever. I do have a friend with a 99 Z A4 that does run high 13's with just an exhaust, so I figure if I have a M6 it'll be where I want it. I'm also worrying when it comes time to do heads and cam and intake that the whole EGR thing will be a pain, and then eliminating it in the future with the LS6 intake will cause drivability problems and the like. I just feel i'd be so much better off holding out for an 01 or 02. I definitely need to keep looking into this a lot more. Thanks so much for the help. I am SO excited to get back into a Camaro, I just need to get rid of this stupid Mustang!
Personally, I would buy a 2000 LS1. Plastic gas tank(99up), iron manifolds(00up), bigger cam than 01-02 so you'll really feel an LS6 intake and cheaper than the 01-02s as well. If 2000s had the LS6 block, they would be the best deal by far... I'm not sure which years got the upgraded clutch/slave cylinder, but that might also be taken into consideration. Good luck!
Hey man i feel yah on wanting a SS just cuz its an SS, i just bought a 2000 SS few weeks ago. Hasnt gotten here yet but i will let u know how it is soon. I got it off ebay for 15500 with 50,000 miles so i think i gotta pretty good deal on it. Plus shipping which ran another 600 bucks but hey ive wanted a SS since i got my first third gen 3.1v6. Yes with the money saved you can make a Z faster and make a Z an SS but hey thats FALSE advertising in my book. So 98-02 arent really that much faster/slower than each other it all depends on the driver mostly. i hope to get mid low 13's in mine but we will and i think im a good m6 driver when it comes down to but we will see. Well good luck with the SS. I say buy SS any yr it mostly depends on what you can afford. GOOD LUCK
Thanks for the words of encouragment. How did the whole eBay thing go? I'll probably be purchasing from there myself. Did you buy from a dealer or private party? Did you finance it or pay cash? I just can't wait until I can have one. Like you, i've wanted one since I got my first car (my IROC) and ever since they came out in 96, i've always thought they were really sweet. Nothing wrong with you Z28 guys though!
A few things I was in the same situation had about 12k to spend.
I got a 1998 Formula A4 with 55,000 on it.
First time at the track with it on a humid day and full tank of gas.
Ran a 13.6 @ 104 at Temple Academy dragway with a ****ty 2.16 60'
Edit: That run was stock down to a dirty paper airfilter.
They way I look at it almost everyone is going to mod their car.
The 00-02 have better flow exhaust manifolds..
* Everyone replace those with long tube headers anyways.
The 01-02 have LS6 intake manifold.
* You can probbley pick up a LS6 intake manifold for under $500
01-02 have a truck cam that makes more midrange power.
* Almost everyone who gets past the bolt on stage goes for a diffrent cam.
01-02 are faster from the factory but you are going to pay a lot more between a 98 and 02.
In my case I found it more cost effective to with a 98 since I would be replace the parts the make the diffrence between the 98 and 01-02.

I'd rather have the LS1, but if I were to buy an LT1 again, it would be 94/95 only, unless your going to convert to OBD I and mod it, OBD II is more expensive to deal with, and your going to be spending more money for the same car, other than maybe a mileage difference. So, why by the newest "old" car? I'm not a fan of buying first year cars like a 98 LS1, but you can swap some parts and save some cash vs a newer car.

I mean, from what i've been looking at, it seems the 01/02 dyno at least 310hp, i've seen some of you people dyno'd 315+ stock! I just want to be sure when I get this new car, that assuming i'll cut between a 2.0 and 2.2 60', it'll run 13.5 or better. I mean, if I get a 98 and dyno 260 and run 14.0, i'll be VERY VERY disappointed.
