98-00 vs. 01/02
The Lt1s are ok, i dont know if you wanted to, but trying to find a 97 SS loaded would be as hard and time consuming as trying to find gold coins in your couch and even if you do, expect to hand him the coins and extra $$$ along with it!. I like the Ls1s better, dont know the engine just looks cleaner,
The SS are rare and you dont really see them as much as you do a Z(like someone has mentioned already) and you can always make a Z faster than an SS with the money saved, but just having the privaledged of owning one makes it worth the extra cash youre forking over, Trust me! Its your money, if you find a deal Go For It!! Good luck in getting what you want!

I didn't really settle, the car was in damn good condition and I could not pass it up.
Ok, well, i've finally decided to go with the LS1. I just don't think it's worth getting the LT1 when I know i'll still be in envy when I see a newer SS drive by. Here's a question...
Some of you have said you wouldn't be hesitant to purchase a 98-00 when the obvious better choice would be an 01/02. Why is that? I mean, from what i've been looking at, it seems the 01/02 dyno at least 310hp, i've seen some of you people dyno'd 315+ stock! I just want to be sure when I get this new car, that assuming i'll cut between a 2.0 and 2.2 60', it'll run 13.5 or better. I mean, if I get a 98 and dyno 260 and run 14.0, i'll be VERY VERY disappointed.
So would I be better to hold out for an 01/02? Sure, I can put the LS6 intake on a 98, but I don't want to mess with those kind of mods until the thing is paid off (i'm 20 remember).
Insurance is $150 a month full coverage for an 02 SS, so i'd like to keep my payment under $350/month. Do you think I can get an 01/02 for less than $350 a month? I just don't know. I'm just so afraid i'll get a 98/00 and it'll be slow. There is a kid around here that has an 00 with exhaust and intake and it only runs 14.2 @ 103 with a 2.2 60'... that is what i'm afraid i'll get if I get anything older than 01...

If you want to make sure you don't run 14.0 in the 1/4, just buy a Z28. Then add a complete NOS kit for $650 shipped to your door. With the left over $1350 from not buying a SS you can add lt headers, catback and an air lid. Or just save it to refill your NOS bottle. Your choice. No worries about 14.0 in the 1/4 mile with a 100hp shot as long as you have a clue on how you operate a M6. And just the lt headers, air lid and catback should put you ever the 01-02 ss hp mark with a 98-00 Z28.
Jusy my $.02, GL with your car search.

The reason I want the SS is just because it's an SS. I've always wanted one since they came out in 96, and it's the only "dream car" I can afford at the moment hehe. I could get a Z28 and be really quick, but i'll always wish I would have a SS.
I have want you want!
Well if you are still intrested in buying a 1997 Z28 i have one for sale. It has SS wheels and you can always go buy a SS hood. It is in real good condition. Email me redlt1z28@yahoo.com. Thanks
Whats wrong with 14s? Ive seen an LS1 SS run 14.2!! Theres Turboed SS with 450+ Rwhp and it runs 12.47!! Those times are still quick and would still beat mostly anything on the road, but it takes time and well put money. You cant just buy an Ls1 f-body and expect it to run low 13s or chancely even 12.9s. Just be happy with what you buy and dont care about anything else. If its not "fast", which i find a joke from your part since ALL Ls1s are "Fast!", then the car is not for you or youre not putting your money where it should be.
With a "slow" Z28 or T/A-Formula, you can put it into the 12s or lower with under, or a little over, $5000 worth of mods! A 98 LS1 F-body can be had as cheap as $8000. Think of the money youll have left for modding. Slow?
I dont think so.
Just my .02c
Oh and Ive seen a stock LS1 Z28 run a best of 13.02

I don't really understand what you're trying to say...
14's ARE slow. There is no reason an LS1 should be running 14's. I run 14.3 and think it is awful which is why I want an LS1 to be a lot quicker. I don't plan on running 12's stock, I just want to be sure i'm definitely in the 13's bone stock. What's so wrong with that? You're only fooling yourself if you are trying to convince you or anyone else a 14.0 is fast. You're getting quicker, but come on, if you have a $30k 02 SS and running 14's, i'd be looking at your driving skills. There is NO reason whatsoever for a bolt-on 302 to be running as quick as some LS1's in the 1/4. That's just not right, and I don't want to have one of those cars because that'll just defeat the purpose of moving up. A Lt1 will run low 14's all day, even poke into the 13's, but if an LS1 can't do it, then why bother?
So since i'm going to be spending that much money on a new car, I am going to be sure i'm running a good half second quicker than my mustang is running now, which means I better be running a 13.80 or else i'm going to feel like I wasted a lot of money.
And no... I don't think Z28's are slower than a SS, I just have always wanted an SS because of the fact it's an SS. Sure, I can get a Z28 and make it look like a SS, but it'll still never be one. If everyone felt that they shouldn't spend the extra for a SS, then there wouldn't be any out there.... but as you know, there were more SS's sold in 02 than Z28's... besides, this has nothing to do with my original question. I just wanted to know when compairing the 98-00's to the 01/02's if it was worth the extra money for the extra power...

Ls1s do sometimes hit 14s, and not only because of drivers error or lack of skills. Like i posted, i saw this SS run a 14.13 followed by a cobra which ran an even worst 14.41. It was just a horrible day for cars with none hitting the times they should! And back to your original question... 98-00 compared to a 01-02... Get the cheaper one. Theyll both run the same. The 01+ even with the manifolds still dont run that much quicker than their counterparts w/o the manifold.
Thanks, that's more what I want to hear
I'm just so worried i'm not going to run in the 13's stock. For 2 grand I could have a 12 second Mustang, but that's not the point... I hope that if i'm going to spend $300+ a month that it'll be 13's right out of the box
