70K Miles

The 98Z28 just turned 70,000 miles and is still running as strong as ever. For you new car owners, here's a list of some of the things I've done or had done since I've owned my black beastie, this will give you an idea of what I had to fix/replace on my 4th gen f-body:

- New clutch at 55K miles
- New front brake rotors/pads at 50K miles
- Misc. seals replaced
- O2 sensors replaced
- Radiator flush/new fluid at 60K miles
- On my third set of tires, the Goodyear F1's were the worst for wear
- New serpentine belt at 60K miles
- Misc. light bulb replacement
- Oil changes every 3K to 4K miles

The car has been very reliable in the 5 years that I've owned it, other than the items listed above, no real major problems (knocking on wood). I plan on keeping the car as long as possible. The 99SS is pushing 56K miles and is still running strong.

Thumbs up Always good to hear !!

Me, I am pushing 43K on the 99 SS.

Oil changes every 4 - 5 K (synthetic) , with such troubling issues to date as:
  • 3 Coolant sensors - it is presently working on # 4, but I think I will clean this one as it's on my dime !!
  • New rotors @ 42K - turned the old ones once , pads still have 2/3 the life in them.
  • T-tops rattle - got 'em adjusted twice under warranty - learning to live with them now !!
  • Driveshaft replaced to get rid of clunking noise - that didn't solve it, but it seems to have vanished over time. Perhaps the rear end found it's desired level of sloppiness ??
  • Steering shaft replaced due to clunk felt in steering wheel - warranty.
  • On 3rd dash cluster - original replaced to fix resetting trip meter - a ' 99 exclusive problem - 2nd cluster had funny readings. 3rd cluster installed after warranty was out by yours truly, who then had the dealer reset the PCM (gotta be done when the clusters are changed) & then had to fight to get the labor charge covered - I got it, though !!
  • On 3rd idler pulley - got the belt replaced for free, too !

That's over a span of a year & 5 months, roughly, and 19K.

I am also a picky S.O.B. !!

Nothing that I would consider major, and since the factory warranty ran out (bumper to bumper) & I am now buying an aftermarket warranty w/ a deductible I am saving claims for the big stuff - should it occur.

Enjoy !!

Britt

P.S. Here is an interesting link on Vette longevity from Stangnet !

I replaced the clutch with a stock one.
I don't beat the snot out of my car, they're both daily drivers. But I do get on them when the urge strikes. Haven't been to the strip yet but certainly would like to. I've got Falken Zeix on the Z28 and Goodrich KDWS on the SS. Believe it or not, the Falken tires look great, perform/wear pretty well. Can't beat the price either, under $100 a piece. This post is very informative to me, as I am planning on buying a used LS1 car in the spring. Keep it up!!! I am concerned about getting rid of my problematic LT1 and ending up with a more expensive problematic LS1.

Thanks!!!

I have 47K on mine, and I'm still smiling more and more when I drive it. So far, the only shop that my car has seen is Thunder Racing
-I faithfully change my oil and rotate my tires (I'm on my 2nd set of Eagle HP's, still lookin' good).
-recently changed the spark plugs (won't last 100K!) and the serpentine belt
-will have to change the clutch soon; probably because this is my first manual tranny
-I'm usually pretty easy on the engine, but we all get the need for speed sometimes!

Enjoyed the post!

I have 66K on mine and;

- I changed the oil with Royal Purple every 4-5K

- Changed the plugs about 20,000 miles ago (time for some new ones)

- Got a new set of tires

- Changed the tranny fluid

-Changed the powersteering fluid (replaced it with Lucas fluid; great stuff)

- Change the rear fluid for Red-line

- Changed the brakes

And that's it ! It's my dailydriver (30 + miles a day) and I love this freaking CAR!

Thumbs up

Try 68K miles on a 2001! I have had only the following problems with mine:

Trans rebuilt (I broke it)
Warped rotors (replaced with PowerSlots)

and that's it. Only replaced wear items such as oil, filter, wipers, tires.

I've got you all beat, 71,000 miles and still the original clutch.
Daily driver, not really beat on (no power shifts) but pushed to the limit on occasion. been to the track a couple times. but run mostly on the street (probably over 500 street runs)

I use either Castrol or Valvoline synthetic, change it every 3K to 4K miles. Have not changed any fluids except for engine oil and coolant.

24K on my 2002. I pile the miles on, but can't seem to leave her in the garage and drive the 93 Cavalier w/140K!! That's the price of livin' in the country and workin' in the city. Bought her (I'm third owner) with 9K in April. The F1's were shouldered pretty good, but got them to 23K. The only repair? Turned the rotors when the KDW's went on. Sweet, sweet ride. Wish me luck on making the 12's Friday night. (Tires, TB grind and bypass since last trip)

'98z used, with 37,800 mi.
no major problems, steering fluid somehow vanished almost to nothing, caught it just in time. no leaks found!
there's a click when I turn the wheel either way and it feels slightly mushy.
brake pads never replaced that i know of.
replaced tran fluid at 21,200 mi, plugs about 5,000 mi. ago
fuel filter three mos. ago,
diff. fluid changed every yr.

still waiting to change:
coolant,
tranny fluid again
brake fluid???
