Post 6.0 ls1

I was wondering if you guys know what heads flow better from the factory. Is it the 6.0 truck heads "iron version" or the F body 5.7 heads? And would you know if the truck intake would bolt up to the 5.7 F body heads? I have a set of each of these heads and want to have some minor port work done to them to be put on my 6.0 block. I am looking for the most bang for my money. Thanks for any info

Unless I'm wrong, I'd say they use the same heads. The 6.0L uses aluminum heads, same as the LS1, except the block is cast iron and bored out to 4" instead of 3.9" like the LS1's aluminum block. The stroke for both engines is 3.62" (vs 3.48" for traditional 350 SBC's).

Back to the heads: they're probably the same, therefore the intake should also be the same. The only difference between the 6.0L and the 5.7L LS1 is that the truck engine has a 9.4:1 Compression Ratio, vs the LS1 has a 10.25:1 CR --- however, my guess is that they use different pistons. I doubt that the heads have larger/smaller chambers to decrease/increase the CR --- that would make a difference then --- but likely they're the same.

Just to be safe, I'd use the intake and heads from the LS1, cause you know they put out good power. Plus, if you're using the intake from a 2001/2002 LS1, it's actually the LS6 intake, so that's a bonus too.

Unless someone can say otherwise, that's my best guess.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info pete. The motor I have is a 99 6.0 with the iron heads. But I agree I think I will go with the 5.7 F body heads. If anything they will save a lot of weight. But I have read that the truck intake actually out flows the Ls6 intake, but is not used due to being to tall. This motor is going into a 95 s10 with a cow hood so clearance is not a problem. I am curious though as to how well it will run compared to my Z.

Question

The 6.0L used cast-iron heads in '99??? Are you sure? I'm not questioning you - maybe they do - but if so, they've changed that since, cause I know for a fact that the new ones use aluminum heads. I was actually just looking at a truck today (my girlfriend's dad's truck) - a 2001 (I think) - and it had aluminum heads, but a cast-iron block. I know it has a striking resemblence to the LS1, even though it's not.

That should be a cool project though, and I'll bet it'll go good!!! Plus, it's nice having fuel injection vs. carbureted. My dad and I have had a couple older S10's with 350's, but they've all been old-school carb'd 350's that overheat all the time, and run rough --- but they're still cool!! (and fast! )

Also the iron heads are a different design.
The aluminum heads are in effect an ls6 head with a larger combustion chamber, something like 70 cc.
So to keep the compression you have to mill them.
