5.3 heads are very common these days. They carry the same ports as your 5.7 heads, the only diffrence being a smaller combustion chamber. This will give you the advantage of more compression without the loss of piston to valve clearence. Almost every head porter uses these heads, and they can make great power in any particular application. It's a great head for those on a budget also. Just make sure to upgrade the valves. The stock truck valves are kinda small.

I was wondering about how much it would cost , if I bought my own heads , how much a loacl machine shop would charge for the porting and valve job .

I would make sure the local machine shop knows what they are doing before I drop my heads off with them. They may be pro's at some old school stuff and not have a clue when it comes to LS-1's. There are to many sponsors that sell these heads already ported and complete for $1000-$1500 for me to worry about the local guys. On the other hand, our local shop charges $700-$800 for P&P, valves, valve job, and so on. I wouldn't let them touch my stuff though. Maybe your machine shop has a better reputation?

I have a set for sale. They are mildly ported. I picked up 25hp with them. I'm buying AFR's now so I'm selling them. If you want them let me know. They have comp 918 springs on them, titanium retainers, and they were upgraded to the LS1 valves. I only have about 3000 miles on them.
$500
PM me if interested.

I know this doesnt apply to your setup but for other readers...
A guy I know has them on his '01(?) WS6 and hes putting down 525rwhp(?) running 6 psi with a Vortech SQ with liquid to air intercooler.
lol crazy choice I know but it works, he doesnt plan on running any more boost....
