I'm not 100% on this, but I think the stock A4 is good up to about 400~450hp without modification. If you do things like a Hypertech and up the firmness of the shifts, it's gonna wear out the internals quicker. After that, it's all about upgrading the belts and clutch packs...

I have a 2000 SS A4 with about 400-450 hp, and to tell you the truth I don't trust the tranny. I just made a appointment to get my tranny built at a local shop, i suggest getting a valve kit, tranny cooler, high performnce clutches, and a high perfomance band. It might run you around 600 bucks but it will be well worth it. Then bring on the power.

GM manuals say:
Maximum engine torque: 475 NM (350 ft lbs)
Maximum Gearbox torque: 910 NM (670 ft lbs)

Hope this helps more than confuses.

Doesn't the engine produce 350 torque stock? So nothing is supposed to be added?

Don't ask me, the specs. are from the Hydra-Matic 4L60e Technicians Guide (second edition), printed by General Motors Powertrain. I didn't write it, only replied to the note. Although, the 60 is based on "relative torque capacity", sounds like there is some wiggle room.
