4.10 4.11 Gear strength

Holy Sh*t ! I was looking at a 4.10 and a 4.11 side by side. The 4.11 teeth are nearly twice as thick as the 4.10. The 4.10 pinion to ring tooth ratio was 10:41, while the 4.11 was 9:37. I wish I had taken a picture, what a difference. What would be stronger More teeth to distribute the force, or fewer, much stronger teeth? I would think the stronger teeth would win out. Is that correct?

Aren't 4.11's a Ford gear ratio?? I agree that the thicker gears would be stronger though.

I've read that the 4.11's are stronger than the 4.10's, all else being equal.

Any insight into the reasoning behind that?

The general consensus is that thinner teeth are worse. I haven't found the thread I referred to, but I have come across one where a guy broke 4.11's twice in his stock rearend here.

Nope, GM used 4.11's in 67 - 72 Chevy trucks as an Option. 3.73 was standard gear ration back then as well, even 99 - 03 Chevy/GMC trucks have 3.73 gears as well... Like even back in 67 - 72 Chev/Gmc Pick ups had 3.07 as an option but even now the closest gear ratio to that is 3.08... My guess is some gear ratios are more popular for other oem manufacturers, like chrysler had uses 3.91 but I have never seen a GM or Ford even use 3.91 but closest I have seen was Fords 3.90 rear end... Depends on which Rear End and year... Correct me if I am wrong...

The teeth looked about twice as thick as the stock gear as well.

well since we use 4.10's in the 7.5" 10 bolt that answers your question..

I just swapped out my 3.42 stock gears for Motive 4.11 gears. You are correct that they are thicker than stock. My installer had to do some milling to get them to fit properly.

So far, I'm very happy with the 4.11's. Driving around town is still a breeze, and I turn about 2100 at 80 MPH in 6th.

All the gears for our 10 bolt are 4.10 not 4.11

the thicker gears are used on the 2 series carrier.. and it DOES NOT mean they are stronger
