Nice numbers! What was the Rear Wheel TQ? What brand of dyno was it? M6 or AT?

Add some mods and see where you can take it!!

Question

Phil1001-

If you have 318 HP at the rear wheels, then GM must be understating the LS1's power. The Trans Am is what, 320 HP stock? That must mean it's more like 340-350 HP at the engine if you dynoed 318 RWHP.

Maybe they intentionally understate the engine's power for insurance purposes.

I take it you're new to the LS1 thing. I think you will be pleasntly supprised to hear this. Every LS1 is underrated atleast in the F-bodies they are. Why becasue the LS1 is the same motor no matter which car it goes into, C5 or F-body. The F-body's are rated at 310 hp for base models and 325 for SS/WS6, the C5 is rated at 350 hp, yet they all dyno near the same numbers. GM has been undrrating the LS1 since they came out in 1997 in C5's and 1998 in F-bodies. Now this 318 rwhp from a stock LS1 is rather high. The highest I've seen is 312 from a 02 SS 6M on a DynoJet. Most dyno between 280-310 rwhp stock six-speed or automatic, 98-02.
BTW, Welcome!

BTW, the typical conversion factor from rear wheels to engine is about 18%, due to drive train loss. Most magazines will use this figure. To be fair lets say ts only 16% (.16) drive train loss, then 318 rw is equivalent to 369 at the motor. If we go with the std. mag number 18% the motor would be rated at 375hp, not bad people.

Nice numbers. Now add a Catback and a LID and u will pickup another 15RWHP at least. I did pickup around 33RWHP and 24RWTQ but then again i'm a Z28 and my stock Catback sucks.

Actually Chevy produced 100 special 1997 Camaro SS Anniversary models with the LS1 engine. I remember seeing one for sale while I was in college at a Chevy dealer in Daytona Florida that year. I got a good look under the hood and from what I remember the setup looked remarkably similar to today’s 98-02 models. It was advertised at 350 hp and I think it started at $40,000 but I don't remember for sure. Anybody else hear about this special edition? You could only get it with the 97 SS Anniversary option.

I think you mean LT4 - that was the engine in the 97 SS's (100). Rated at 330 or so.
