300,000 Mile LS1

My buddy sold his 5.0 and is getting a 99 Z28 this weekend. 6spd, SS Hood/Wheels. It's got 300,000 miles (yep, you read that right). I told him about burning oil, piston slap, etc. He said it runs good, highway miles, and the valve covers have never been off. So I ask you guys, what's gonna happen to this car? What major problems do you forsee? Thanks

-Rippin

NOTE: He's paying right under 8k for it.

Sky's the limit,

Thats a lot of miles on any car.

Add in has it be driven hard & what has been done to car & then it's intended use, alot can go wrong.

Sounds as if someone's unloading their problem, & 8k might be a little high.

What has been done to this car.

It potentially could need alot of work.

While I'm glad to hear one made it to the 300K mark, hes getting raped on the price I think. Theres a lot more to a car than an engine. The transmission, the rear end, the suspension, all that stuff has 300,000 miles on it too. I would stay clear, personally, unless the guy came down another $1500-$2000. You can find 98-99 Z's with under 125,000 in the $9-10,000 range.

There's no way he should be paying $8k for an LS1 with 300,000 miles. That's ridiculous. He can find lots more cars with less than 150,000 miles for almost the same price. I'd tell him to keep shopping.

Wow. 300,000 miles!

That is a testament to what a great motor the LS1 is... and says a lot for the car it's in, too...

I agree with these guys (and gal) the miles are high and he may run into some serious problems soon. Or maybe not. The price is ridiculous. I just bought my 2001 Z with leather, t-tops, electric everything, pretty much loaded. With 15,805 miles I only gave 16,500. I recomend for him to keep looking there are alot better LS1 cars out there.

300,000 MILES?!?!?!?

That's crazy?! Hell, a lot of cars are lucky if they make it to 300,000 kilometers (~185,000 miles) before they die!!! 300,000 miles is around ~485,000 kms........that's almost unheard of unless you've got a VW diesel!

WOW

Who drives 300,000 miles in four years? I guess some people work really far from home.

300,000 miles!!??!!??!!??

Just for ***** and grins I did the math:

75,000 miles a year
6,250 a month
1,442 a month
205 a day

Now, I've seen some contractor friends put close to 75,000 a year on a truck but they are riding around all day visiting job sites, picking up supplies, driving in and out of town all day, meeting with people. I just can't imagine putting that many miles on an F-bod just out of respect for the car. Hell, he needs a VW Jetta TDI - between 40 and 50 mpg. If you ask me that car is just about used up. I would give him 1,000 for it. He'll need the other 7,000 for repairs soon.

I agree, he's getting ripped off big time. With 300k miles, that car should be going for less than $5k.

90-100k mile '98-'99s can be found for less than 10g's.

I would say $5,000 or less would be fair.

And as far as the miles, remember that he could have bought a 99 model in 98, so that helps. But wow, thats still a lot of drivin. Atleast they had a fun car to do it in!!

I bought my 01 Z28 in July with almost 83,000 miles for $10,450. According to Carfax, it was titled in September of 2000. So from 9/00 to 7/03 (34 months), the car averaged about 24K miles a year.

Now, 300,000 miles I might be asking questions, but at least get it for under $7K. Besides, for that cheap, you can do a 347, 12 bolt, and a new T56 and run better than a 30K mile 99 for about the same price

I'm not trying to be a dick, but if your buddy buys that car for $8K he is one hell of a moron. Hell if he pays anything over $5K he's still stupid. I don't care what anyone says about it, highway mileage or not 300k miles is a huge amount for ANY car, let alone a performance muscle car. Lots of other things will need to be taken care of besides the engine. I start getting nervous with cars after they reach 100k.

Listen to the other guys here, and tell your friend to go find a '98 LS1 with around 75k miles for $9-10K

if your on the highway you can spread the oilchanges to about once every 6,000 miles and tires will last well over 50k on the highway........ we like to burn tires so we only get 25k on tires but you use next to no rubber going 75 in a straight line

brakes won't be used much either
