3:42 to 3:73
3:42 to 3:73
I have a 98 camaro ss with the m6. My rear is whining real bad and am going to need some new gears. Will I notice a difference going from 3:42 to 3:73. I do alot of highway driving. I really want the 4:10's but Im not sure if they will hold up with my driving. I only go to the track once or twice a year and run street tires. Let me know what you guys think

FYI
they're not 4:10 or 3:73 or 3:42 gears. The ratios are 4.10:1, 3.73:1, and 3.42:1. A 3:73 gear would be one TALL gear, wouldn't it? That's why the ratios are greater than 1, not less than 1.
Sorry..it's just one of my peeves.
Anyway, I don't think many people try 3.73 gears in M6s, but I had a friend with them in and we both really liked them. I think they should be standard on the M6..they feel really natural and eliminate that bog you get in first gear, while not making the gears too short from a roll.

I have thought a lot about this. If you want a drag car 4.10's no doubt, also if you don't plan on adding more power (really wakes up a stock car). For a street/strip car I think 3.73's would be interesting. You would be the **** from a roll.
I sure noticed my 3.73's. I loved them on the stock motor, but with a cam i needed a littel more to make up for the sluggish bottom. went with 4.11's, and now am runnign 4.30's.
3.73's are a real nice all around gear IMO.
I agree with Chris, they shoud be standard.

Get the 4.10 (or 4.11 depending on what brand)
I just put a Motive 4.11 gear set in my '01 WS6 and I love it! City driving is still very easy, and cruising 80 MPH in 6th gear only turns 2100 RPM.
If I had gone with 3.73, I would have been very disappointed.

whats up?
chrisls you talk about your pet peeves as being corectly identifing the ratio as everything to its final ratio of 1 and in the next paragraph you state a ratio as just 3.73 and not 3.73:1. its a comparision get it , 3.73 turns of one shaft COMPARED to 1 turn of another

Another way to look at is this way as well, Takes 3.73 Turns of the Driveshaft to turn the Rear Wheels 1 (once)...

I just went back to check my math on that one:
3.73/1=3.73 (I'm pretty sure about this.)
Incidentally:
3/73=0.04109589 (hey! I didn't realize that 3:73 gears were really "four-ten" gears!
)
2/73=0.02739726
3/23=0.13043478
3/42=0.07142857
So, I'll make sure to say "0.07142857" when I am referring to 3:42 gears, but I think it's safe to say 3.73 when referring to 3.73:1 gears. At least I'm not changing the ratio of the gears.
