Question 3.23 A4 2002 LS1 VS. 2002 Saleen Mustang

I was told that some guy raced this one punk kid by my house who drives a 2000 Acura Integra Type R and blew the doors off his ricer Integra of course. I know he didn't have a chance. I know out of sheer embarrassment this loser Integra driving kid is going to try to get this Saleen dude and I to race.

Now my car has 960 miles on it and its bone stock. This guys Saleen is brand new supposedly and I don't know if its a 281 or 351, or whatever.

I was told he ran a 4.5 0-60 time of the G-tech.

So what are my chances? What do you guys think? Right now I'm pretty broke but next Wednesday I'm ordering sub-frame connectors and an engine strut brace god permitting.

I'm a broke 19 year old student, so please don't tell me to go out and buy headers or anything like that. I plan on doing mods though, slowly but surely. But cam, headers, etc will have to wait cause I don't want to void my warranty. And besides I'm having a hard enough time trying to save money for a Corsa cat-back system and who knows how long that will take.

Just so you guys know, my insurance is $7,800 a year, $650 a month. So if it weren't for my parents helping me pay for this car, I wouldn't have it.

So please, inform me on my chances right now cause I just may race him.

Wink

If it's a 281 it's a re-badged GT & you'll kick his a$$ like anyother GT. If it's a 281 SC then it'll be close but because you have an A4 you should win. They don't make 381's anymore....

You can beat him. Those Saleens are pretty equal to our cars in stock trim. Sad, huh? With just some good driving and you should beat him.

Damn! Looks like your insurance is more than your car payments. why dont you put the car under your parents name. Also if the saleen is a 281 you should take him, but if its a 351 you might have some trouble.

I know dude, I'm just eventually going to try and buy an older cheaper car and put the Camaro as a my pleasure vehicle. So far, I haven't been driving it every day and when I take it out, its usually only for a couple of hours at time unless I take it to work or school.

Well look at my sig for some times on a loaded stock 3.23 Z28. First off the Saleen won't be a 351 because those are so rare and so expensive that its highly unlikely that you'll have a guy wanting to race you with one. Better chance on finding a Viper to race. Secondly the Saleens are manuals and thats an advantage for you off the line. And the regular Saleen is just a 4.6 SOHC with exhaust and some other small mods. They only make like 285 hp and the S281 badge sits by itself. The SC281 is supercharged it has a "Supercharged" logo under the S281 badge. Those are rated more like 350 hp and run much better than the regular 4.6's. However you should still be able to launch on these and hold them off thru the 1/4 mile. Their performance is fairly equal to a stock LS1. Another thing to check out is free mods for the LS1. Like free ram air, Throttle Body bypass. It all helps and if you have $50 get a cutout that will pick up a few hp.

Since no one has said it you might as well go with the cliche lid, filter, and FRA. You will see major pick up gains right away and it won't cost you an arm and a leg.

Dayumn! I am 20 with 1 ticket on my car (basically a 2000 version of yours) and my insurance is 3800 a year including my modified Jeep Wrangler. I am thr primary driver of the wrangler, and the Camaro does not have a primary driver. Some insurance companies wont allow this, but check around. It looks like It would be cheaper to get and maintain a beater than pay your insurance!
As far as what has been said about the stang, the 351's are rare, and if u get beat by one, dont feel bad. they are 50k+. The 281 Sc is about 40k and will give you a run. The 281 N/A is pretty much a dog. I had a 98 GT with basic bolt on mods running a stunning 14.29@99 so no worries.
Oh, your car will get progressively faster for the next 5-10k miles, so if you dont beat him as bad as you think you should, give it a few miles.
Good luck and very nice car

If it is real new then it can't be a 351, last year they made them was 99. As for the 281 there are alot of factors, the steepest gear you can get for that car from saleen is 3.23's, plus it is an option they only come with 2.73 so they can put that 200 mph speed guage on them, yet they wont even go that fast. New saleens are for looks, they look awsome but even the supercharged one's are not near as fast as they should. Look for a boost guage in the center of the console, and check the hood, if it doesn't look like the factory gt one and it has 2 heat extractors, then it is a carbon fiber hood. Usualy only installed on the supercharged cars, the good option is about 3 grand. Alls' i can say is 3.73's, that is the cheapest way to wake these cars up. The LS1 is a high power band motor unlike the LT1. With gears you stay in that power band, I would say 3.73's, or 3.42's you don't have an aluminmum drive shaft so i wouldn't go any steeper.

A cut-out us a cheap inexpensive mod. Its the best mod i have ever done actually. It dynoed an extra 6rwhp and torque over my 3in catback across the entire rpm chart or whatever. It sounds WICKED to. Then you can at least get a Lid and filter. Then do some free mods. Remove your MAF screen and gut your air box, i bet those ghetto mods are good for a few extra hp mabey...

I know the topic, here, is about your chances against a Saleen Mustang, but "Holy Cow," what some of you guys are paying for insurance is astronomical.

I just switched from State Farm to Pioneer State Mutual, when I bought my SS. They were said to have the best rates around. From shopping insurance, they do.

I had a 4cyl Alero, before my SS and State Farm was charging me, $442 every 6 mos. That's with $500 deductible, broad form collision and $250 deductible, on comprehensive.

The same coverage is running me, just $580, every 6 months, on my SS. Keep in mind I'm 49 years old and that has alot to do with it. The next cheapest company, however, was $350 higher, every 6 months and some companies were double, Pioneer State Mutual's rate. So regardless of age, their rates were by far the best.

If nothing else, it's worth a phone call to get a quote. If you save a ton of money, you could buy those headers, if you want to.

Good luck,
Mark
