A 240SX has called me out! How to prepare for race?
Well, this guy is about 40 something years old, and he's my supervisor at work.
He heard me talking about my Camaro SS's speed - and he claims to have a garaged 240sx that can beat me - and beat me bad.
He wants a 1 mile long race.
He doesnt know alot about cars, he wont tell me what is under the hood or what has been done to it - only that three 'racers' have owned it before, and he bought it for 6 grand or something a while back.
He keeps it garaged at his house.
He doesnt seem to know much about cars, because he bragged how he beat some BMW once - as if all BMWs were 'fast'. He also said that he 'beats camaros all the time'.
He wants to bet $100.
Well, although I seriously doubt a 240sx would beat an SS, I dont want to be caught un-prepared. I'm thinking about bolting a dry 75 shot of nitrous on my 02 Camaro SS just to be safe - so that if I DO happen to need it in the race, I can use it.
What are the chances of a modified 240sx (probably highly modified) taking on my Camaro?
I'd race him now, but in the long shot that its a miracle car, I'd like to be prepared.
This guy isnt that... amazing. He doesnt know much about cars. All he might know about this car is some dude sold him a fast car that was modified, and that if he smacks the pedal down it'll go fast. No way in hell he has Nitrous.
Thoughts...?

He just told me it's a 1991, and with an automatic.
Say we did a 50 roll.
What speed do you think my Camaro can get to in a mile? I've got a manual transmission.
I dont see how his automatic could keep up.

So what's the top speed of my Camaro 02 Camaro SS?
Whats the speed limiter set to, and what would be the limit if I removed the limiter?
Also, what do you think is the top speed of a 4-Gear automatic?
I think I won right there.

A mile is way too long..i think you will pull really hard if you go for the entire mile, but i do know of 240sx's with sr20's and bolt ons and with the boost up they put over 350 RWHP..and there light as hell..but that is one of the fastest ones i have seen.
with a 50 roll, your going to be flying at the end of a mile..
Do you really want to be racing at least 140+ besides someone else down some random road which is most likely a neglicted back road?
I'd do a quater mile from a stop.. It'll make it safer, and more challenging.

run the mile.. you will not top out.. takes more than 1 mile to max out our cars.. if we are just at almost 14 sec and doing about 105 then i think 130 comes up in at about 30ish sercond mark.. at this point you are traveling the 1/4 mile every 7 seconds or so.. that alone shows you that in the 1 mile race you should be no more than 140mph...
so.. abandon the engine swap and think what if he shoehorned a 350 sbc in there... the car is lighter than your but not by a terrible amount..
I think the race could be good.. the guy is betting that his car has longer legs.. just race.. but stipulate that after the race whiel the $ is changing hands, you want to see whats under his hood..
or better yet, prove the durability of your LS1 by adding.. 1 mile race.. both ways.. do 1 mile, turn around line up and do another mile.. back to back high speed passes.. his "built" motor may not be able to handle the heat..
if you go to spray that only increases your chances of messing up your motor..

I cruise on the freeway at about 85-95... often going into the 100's to eat up space.. I have raced in traffic (not he wisest but one of the most fun) against an M5 at 140+. No exaggeration no lie.. he was doing 3 lane changes at a time.. some people have no sense.. I was in my LT1.. On his bumper the entire time so I could aggrivate him..
Perhaps its location.. here in houston we have lots of area to open up your car... I know groups of motorcylists that have done the 92 mile loop around houston on our Beltway toll road in 28min.. you do the math.. avg speed is wicked.. we have that luxury... i guess.
some things that need clearing up...
ls1 can do 170mph but have to have the top speed limiter remved.....
and ls1s do not run close to 14seconds....they run mid to low 13s and better
mine ran 13.3 stock.....with crappy bald stock 16inch tires......with a 2.2 60ft time......
in a mile goin from a roll at 50 mph it is very likely you will hit the top speed limiter.....

A one mile race with a rolling start??? Don't endanger you life and the lives of other just to show a tool what your made of. He might know more that he lets on. beware. Go to a local track, run the 1320 the way it's supposed to be done. Your trap lights up, you win. No way to dispute it. And you each get a timeslip to show the people at work.
