2002 Z28 Tachometer died
2002 Z28 Tachometer died
I have a 2002 Z-28 / M6. 74 km. Mid tube headers / cat-back / cold air intake.
I made a long road trip in last week and stopped for fuel. When I restarted the car the tachometer was dead and the SES light came on. I used my tuner to read the code and it was 0342. The car started fine and ran fine even on the return trip. My volt meter is reading low and when I turn on the AC and other electronics it goes down to 12 volts.
Today I went to the store and it cranked but did not fire right away. When I when to return home I had to crank it about 10 seconds before it fired.
WTF??
Anyone else experience this or know the fix??

Longer cranking time with that code is listed in the diagnostics. Don't know if you can troubleshoot it yourself but here's some info: www.gearchatter.com/viewtopic9359.php Voltage shouldn't be that low, probably not related - I'd look at that first, load test the battery, check voltage, etc.
Probably a bad camshaft position sensor. Failure of this sensor would set DTC P0342. It is also the sensor responsible for providing a tach signal to the PCM, which sends a tach signal to the instrument cluster.
It's a relatively inexpensive part, but you have to remove the intake manifold to replace it. It's on the top back of the block, next to the oil pressure sending unit. You may also have to perform a crank relearn, which can be done with GMs Tech II scanner.
