Unhappy 2002 Z28 with Stock FLAT H-Pipe??

I was wanting to do a cutout mod to my '02 LS1 Z28 (under the assumption that it had a 3" pipe from the cat all the way to the muffler). I got under the car only to find two very small cats coming off of each manifold into dual "flattened" pipes with a small H balancer bridge at the front end and dumping into a Y pipe near the rear axle. Is this stock???? Where do I go from here? Is this system good, bad??? I can't imagine a pair of flattened pipes would help performance. Any info or tips???? I bought the car new, with no aftermarket exhaust listed.

Hmmm...not sure what the "H-bridge" is that you're talking about, but the stock y-pipe is flattened, yes... A lot of people replace that y-pipe, but more to get rid of the cats rather than 'fixing' the flat parts. But, I agree with you - it can't be good for performance...

good luck,
Shane

There apears to be two small SLP low restrictive cats right off of the manifolds. The H-bridge I refer to is a small pipe going between the two pipes directly behind each cat. If you look at the twin SLP cats on the slp website "www.slponline.com" you will see that they have small holes in the sides of the outlet pipes that seem to support this theory. What I don't get is that this does not appear stock, yet I didn't pay for a different exhaust, nor was one listed. Any ideas on why I have this setup. Was it offered stock on the Z28? Also, still interested in a cutout. Any suggestions on how to do it with this configuration?

the h-part makes NO sense to me..

H-Pipes are for dual exhaust systems

No f-body comes with duals, and no it couldnt have been done from the factory.

AHA!!!! Called the service department at my dealer and found out that what I am describing is the SS exhaust system. So my Z28 has an SS exhaust, go figure. Mystery solved. I guess I will just have to do a custum cutout in the back, near the muffler. Any other suggestions???

SS Exhaust?

I'm pretty sure that an SS exhaust has no H pipe. In fact I'm positive. You lost a long time ago.

Okay, the overwhelming response from this board is that my exhaust is NOT SS. That would mean that the head service guy at my dealer had no clue what he was talking about. I am willing to admit if I am wrong. I will post a pic soon, and you guys tell me what I've got. I am not trying to prove anything, just trying to figure out why my exhaust seems so different.

You have a y-pipe, not a h-pipe, which comes off the dual cats to a single 2 3/4 pipe to the muffler, then out two pipes on either side of the muffler......service guys at the dealer dont know, you just talked to a bill wrighter probally, many of us have been under these cars and that is what the Z28, SS , WS6,etc come with as a y-pipe. SLP options are after the y-pipe.
