2002 Cam is different?

Are the 02 cams different then the 98-01's? If so, what is the difference?

I "think" that the '01-'02 cams are the same. The '98-'00 LS1 had a bigger more aggressive cam and the '01-'02 LS1 got a smaller cam that was made for emissions to delete the EGR valve. It's not really that big of a difference though.I do not know any of the specifics of the 2 cams, sorry.

nikkev,

I have documentation that the '99 - '02 use the same camshaft.
Part # 12560965, I think the '98 was the same, but can't
confirm.

The specs for the cam:
.500" lift intake and exhaust
200 deg intake & 208 deg exhaust duration @ 0.050"

Hope this helps.

nikkev,

It was the way that the federal regulations are handled, I don't
know all the details. I do know that we (GM Powertrain)
recently eliminated the EGR on almost all the V8 (GEN III)
applications. EGR currently is used in only a couple of the
trucks.

I've also been told that EGR will probably come back in the
next couple of years to meet the ultra low emission regulations
comming out.

Again I don't know all the details, I think they were able to
handle the emissions with different calibration and better
cats.

Cool thanks! So I should be able to remove mine on my 1998 Z and have no problems other than the SES light (until a computer reprogramm) correct?

Those #'s look good to me (well, accurate, not "good". "Good" would be >.500" lift!!!)

Those latest numbers are more accurate than what I mentioned
before, sorry to mislead you. I was looking at a chart for the
Austrailian engine which shared the cam with the F-car until
'01 when the F-car switched. I didn't catch that first glance
at the chart.

Oh well, everyone makes mistakes, I'll admit mine here.

Didn't mean to cause any confusion.

Talking

Yeah, the smaller cam in the 01-02s offset the bulk of the increase from the LS6 manifold. However, the newer cars torque and "power under the curve" are excellent.

So you're saying that putting the LS6 intake on a '98-'00 will make more power than a stock '01-'02 since we have the larger cam?

Yes. And LS6 intake on a 98-00 car will yield better results. The 98-00 cars have a larger cam. You can buy a LS6 mainfold from SLP that has the egr provisions for the 98-00 cars. Some people have put 15+hp at the rear wheels with just that manifold alone. Weiland has a new aluminum LS6 intake that can be ported to all hell. A few guys were saying how a well ported intake was showing relsults as high as 35 hp at the rear wheels. And that was just intake alone. This was also on a 98-00 car.
