Maybe it's not the alternator as the cause but it's the effect of another problem. Load test the battery, check the battery cables for corrosion, and check all ground wires.

possibly a problem with your electrical system or a short in the wires leading to the alternator??

Check all the wiring connections to the alt - especially the exciter wire. If they're parts store remanufactured alts they might just be bad - friend of mine went through a couple of those before springing for a new OEM GM unit. Are you throwing any codes like generator L circuit, etc?

Check the wiring harness alternator connector(the Little red wire that goes plugged in your alternator

Also don't forget to double check your battery connections,I know everybody says they double and triple checked them but the same thing happened to me two days ago.I took out my rema. alternator to get it tested and guess what it passed so I go home and put it back together and put a New bolt on the positive side for the battery and everything was normal.

Switch the Ignition relay and Starter Relay with the Fan Relays before you do anything else. They're under the hood. I had a similar problem, turned out to be the crappy oem relays.
