Without this option you'd have 2.73s and a steel driveshaft.

Doesn't that mean it's the posi axle? I seem to recall that on my window sticker too.

all the v8 cars had posi's. Al nailed it on the head, auto's w/o the performance axle (3.23); got 2.73's and a steel DS.

6 speeds were 3.42 only. not sure on the v6's.

I won't say for certain you're wrong, but I'm sure I remember in '95 buying mine, there was a choice between open 2.73 and posi 3.23 on the A4. IIRC all the manuals had the posi with a 3.42. Dunno, it was a long time ago

Im pretty sure that no 4th gen, v8 cars had an open rear.

But the OP asked about a 98, this is the ls1 section, and I know all 98+'s were what Al said. .

Yeah, you're right. I did a search and found the LSD listed as standard equipment for either trans

GM did not give anything away, LIMITED Slip rears were a option RPO G80.
It may have been required on certain models but the original owners paid for that option.

True you paid for it but no v8 4th gens left the factory with an open rear end.

I don't think anyone suggested it was "free" or that GM was giving them away. One response suggested that buying the "performance axle" meant you got a limited slip, and that was not correct. I think everyone is smart enough to figure out that you pay for all the components that are standard on the vehicle.
