10w30 oil alright?

i have 5qts of Mobil 1 10w30 oil that i have left over from my 96Z (bought it intending to change the oil...but totalled the car before i could).

is this weight oil sufficient to use on a 99 LS1 with 46k miles? or should i go for 5w30?

oh and by any chance are the filters the same from lt1's to the ls1s? not that that's a big deal...jsut curious cause i have that too.

thanks

Can't help you on the filter thing, but since you are in a warm climate, the 10W30 oil works fine. If you'd be in colder climate, then the 5W30 or 5W50 would be suggested.

I've used Mobil 1 10W30 in all my F-bodies.

This is my point of view based on my experience, but I'm sure somebody will pitch in with contradictory information from some researches made etc. ec., so take it just as that: my opinion.

If you're using Fram, the LS1 takes a PH3506 oil filter and a CA3914 air filter.

I just use 5W-30 in my car, it's what the instruction manual says.

Thumbs up See the BOTTOM of this Idaho Vette Page article.

Yeah, it's a Vette, but same motor !

http://www.idavette.net/hib/C5diy/c5diy1.htm

They talk about 5W30 & 10W30.

I have used both - very little difference in oil pressure from what I have seen, and since I don't do a whole lot of straight highway I can't really speak for the mileage differential.

I can say that I buy whatever I can get my hands on - when Napa had a sale on Royal Purple, all they had was 10W30 - so be it.

For $3.99/qt, I was not gonna biatch.

Hope this helps !!

5w-30 is thiner so it can take temperatures that are lower than 0 deg F, But it is also runnier. I use 10w-30 because temp around here never drops below 0 deg F and it is thicker so it tends not to run off the engine parts as fast. Or at least that is how someone explained it to me when I asked

thanks guys...i figured it was fine to use. i mean i was using it on my LT1 from 40K miles to 59K when i got rid of it.

sofar nobody has mentioned whether the filters are the same. i think i got a standard Puroilator or a Pure One...

i'll have to check when i stop off at a auto store to see if it is the same.

thanks again

Nope oil filters are not the same. Stock AC brands are PF25 for the LT-1 and PF44 for the LS-1. I got lucky last year and caught Wal-Mart getting rid of all there PF44 stock. I got 10 of them for $0.50 each. Later>>>>>>>>>

I felt this thread was worthy of resurrecting because I've always had that "mental splinter" that something was wrong with a blanket prescription of 5W-30 oil for all the engines, both foriegn and domestic, that have the recommendation for this oil weight. Here's MY story:

9000 miles ago (73,000 at that time) I pulled the heads off my '98 during header installation to port the heads. I was ecstatic to find the cylinder sleeve cross-hatchings in apparently virgin condition; especially since it was obvious that the previous owner (San Antonio....HOT!!!) hadn't been really punctual with fluid maintenance in the very least. For what it's worth....this story held SO much credibility and common sense, that I took the initiative to change 2100 mile Mobil1 5W-30, to Mobil1 10W-30.

I'm gettin' on in mileage and although she "runs liked 60", I know the expanded tolerances could probably benefit even more from an oil that hadn't been watered down.

Anyone with an opposing view to this info. is welcomed-- AND --challenged to voice a contrasting set of points........I'd love nothing more than to learn better than what I feel is correctly stated above!!!!
