Z28 trans Question

I have 2000 Z28 automatic. I just pulled away from a stop light and my car started grinding real loud. Its coming from the undercarriage like its the transmission or the rear end. It is real loud at first but quiets down after shifting into second and speeding up a little. Does anyone have an idea what this might be? If its the transmission is there an easy way to replace it on a limited budget like maybe switching to an older Th350 or 400. Any info would help.

Re: Z28 trans Question

It's probably the transmission if it does better after first gear. I'm having mine rebuilt right now and it can get real expensive if you wait on it. I waited on mine to go down to just having one gear and reverse and I'm paying for it. If you want to save money just have it fixed while it's messing up one gear and not the rest cause the longer you wait the more it will cost.
