Where the name Z28 comes from

I was wondering if anyone knew where they came up with the name Z28, is there any technical meaning behind it. Or do American cars just pick numbers and letters out of a hat.

Re: Where the name Z28 comes from

Its just a code that was used on the first gens for a performance package i believe. Almost like a Z51 equipped corvette. The name just stuck and became associated with performance model camaros.

Re: Where the name Z28 comes from

Chevrolet wanted a Camaro that could compete in the Trams Am series races. This series had a cubic inch limit of 305, and a factory production quota in order to be considered for TA racing. In 1967, Chevy built 602 Camaro's equipped with the Z/28 performance package with a 302 engine and some changes for road racing. The Z/28 was used as the RPO code to designate this package. So, to answer your question, the Z/28 model was named after the RPO code created for it.

Well yeah, it's the RPO code, but it has no other real meaning. Just some digits stuck together.

Right. Just explaining the history behind it.

oh, and Schmidt, don't believe it if anyone tells you it means 2 door 8 cylinder. Otherwise a Z06 would have no doors and 6 cylinders

Chevy uses a lot of RPO codes as model designations. Z24, Z28, Z06, Z51. They're just like the motor designations (LT1, LS1, L98)...just numbers pulled out of someone's rear end.

No...that's a Mustang.

Camaro means pal, buddy, friend. French origin was it?

Re: Where the name Z28 comes from

An interesting quote from a website you will find with a search for "Camaro definition":

The Chevrolet Camaro was a compact car introduced in North America by the Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors at the start of the 1967 model year as competition for the Ford Mustang. Although it was technically a compact (by the standards of the time), the Camaro, like the entire class of Mustang competitiors, was soon known as a pony car.

Though the car's name was contrived with no meaning, General Motors researchers found the word in a French dictionary as a slang term for "friend" or "companion." Ford Motor Company researchers discovered other definitions, including "a shrimp-like creature" and an arcane term for 'loose bowels!" In some automotive periodicals before official release, it went by the name, "Panther".

Judging by the number of times I've heard, even on this board, many think it is.
