Whats the difference between a 95lt1 and a 97lt1 engine?

I have a 95z with a hydrolocked motor. And I found a 97 lt1 engine being sold locally with very little miles on it.

I understand the 97 lt1 is obdII . Will I have problems with the swap?

No, just use the wiring harness and sensor from the 95. The 97 has the vented opti so you'll need the hoses for that. Some connector ends may be different.

Went to dual Cats. in 96. My 97 SS was rated at 305hp.

The only difference in the 95 and 97 engines is the crank position sensor in the front cover, and the reluctor ring and shorter crank hub that go along with it. You can just plug your OBD1 PCM into the engine and go. Use your 95 exhaust manifolds though, because of the change in 96-97 dual cat setups. The AIR hookups are also different on the 96-97 manifolds.

95 LT1s had vented opti's as well. No change there.

Sounds good.. I just noticed that the heads on it aren't aluminum . What does this mean? That it originally came from a capri? I hate being lied too....

All F-body and Vette heads are aluminum, so yes it came out of a Caprice, Impala, or Roadmaster. Those LT1s could have other differences from the F-body LT1, besides the milder cam and iron heads.

95-97 all use the vented Opti.

There was never an aluminum LT1 block

If it has iron heads, you have to make sure its actually a 350ci (5.7L) LT1 engine. The Caprice also got an engine which is externally identical to the LT1 but is only 265ci (4.3L) and an L99. A real LT1 will have "327" on the block (last 3 digits of the casting number), while the L99 has "4.3L" on the block.

You can't use the 97 knock sensor with your 95 PCM. You have to swap the knock sensor from your 95. The B-Body LT1 (SS/Roadmaster/Fleetwood) in addition to the iron heads has a milder cam.

Nice Thanks for the information guys.

I on the block it does say "327" "GM 5.7LG SG1" and a "5".

So If i swap out the heads from my old lt1 and the cam. It should be alright right?

My old lt1 hydrolocked. Hopefully it didn't mess up the heads. The sound it made sounded like it was from the block.

Thanks Again for the help

If it's iron headed, it's not a 97.

Yeah I know its not from a 97. I opened up the motor today because the guy said it was rebuilt less than 20,000 miles ago. But I wanted to check for sure. Since nothing he said has been true.

Motor looks great. No build up of oil anywhere. No rust , No water, Everything looks fine. Gaskets/Seals are in perfect shape. I'm going to have a mechanic take a second look. Before I put it in. I do not want anything breaking up afterward.

Ill put on my aluminum heads from my old block. And If i have enough money ill put in another performance cam or if im broke ill put in the stock cam that my old block had.

I'm doing this with some money I'm borrowing from my gf... So I don't want to waste that much because I'm going to have to pay it back sooner or later.

The aluminum heads are heavier, but they also flowed better. The LT1 used in the Caprice/SS/Roadmonster was no slouch, tuned for torque- 260 HP and 330 ft.lbs torque, to get those boat anchors moving. I have seen a couple people go the other way, putting F-car LT1's in the B-body.
