What would you do?
The advantage of the LT1 is you can get a decent running one with a good body in the 3500-5000 range. With the LS1, you are going to get alot more power out of the box due to a much more refined engine, but you are going to pay quite a bit more for one as well.
Spend the extra cash and get the LS1.

I would normally say LS1, but I'll play Devil's Advocate.
If you get the LT1 you can spend the extra on mods and have a fairly decent LT1. If you can find an LT1 under 85,000 miles, why not go for it, it is still a good starting platform and will last a while. The LS1 is a great motor, but so is the Lt1 in its own respect. IMO, I think the LT1 sounds better with a cam/heads package too for what its worth.

I have no opinion
.
Unless you want me to talk about the time my buddy ran 13.7 with his LT1 ..... but I ran 13.0
. Or my other friend who couldn't get under 14.5 with his LT1. Or a couple other guys who were running on the 14.0/13.9 border. These cars range from stock to lightly modded (surprisingly, the 13.7 car is stock!
)
... BUT, my stock/lightly modded LS1 has had no problem walking ANY of the LT1's, ANYWHERE
.
... also, about ~5 laps around Mosport in my car convinced a guy in my club to sell his '97 Z28 and buy an '02 Z28
.
But, maybe I'm biased??
