What RPM do you shift at?
What RPM do you shift at?
Whenever I get funky, I usually shift right about 5000. I never rev higher than that. The car is stock, so I'm not really sure about how things will hold up if I push it.
Where do other folks shift?

I usually shift between 3500-4000 rpm when I'm running around town. If I'm taking it on the highway, I might go to 4500 or so. I know the car could probably take more, but there's no sense in beating the crap out of it.
When I am "on it to be on it" I shift my car at red-line, but I don't go out and redline a bunch of times each day, I take it pretty easy on my car. I don't enjoy beating the **** out of it or anything.
I take my stock engine up to abput 5700rpm,if your only taking yours up to 5000rpm you are missing out on a bit of extra power.
My car has just under 60,000 miles on the clock and is in very good shape and I'm pretty sure it can handle these revs.I think the stock rev limit is set at 5850rpm.
After all, it is supposed to be a muscle car and that's why I bought the M6 so I could change up when I wanted

I agree. When I'm just driving around town, I shift at 2000 rpm's. To me, beating on my car is going up to 4000. Of course, mine has a lot of miles. It's always been babied since I've owned it.....and I got it when I was 18!
Wherever the rev limiter kicks in
.
If you want to "get funky", give 'er all she's got
. Anything less, you're being a pu$$y!!
For normal day to day stuff, ~3000 is all it needs, but if you're taking it upto ~5000, why not go to ~6000???

To give you guys an example of beating on it, and what it can take..
I'm taking good care of my LS1. Shifting at 2k-3k, if I'm getting on it it sees 4k-5k.
My old LT1 would bounce off the rev limiter daily. I was ALWAYS getting on that thing. I never had ANY engine problems (even when a van pulled out in front of me and totaled it, I had to shut the engine off)
My V6, because I was young and had something to prove, was floored EVERYWHERE. I sold it to a guy who does the same, and its at 190k miles right now. Engines can take more abuse than you guys think.. either that, or I'm exceptionally lucky.
I've personally noticed, the easier you go on something the more it tends to break down when you do hammer it. The Italian tune up is in order sometimes.

I thought I was the only one here like this!
Never had my Z wound higher than 4k.
Guess I'm MORE scared of spinning a bearing than my drive to 'see what she can do'
Tal
Never peaked past 4k.
Hey, once I have a nice, new crate engine standing by in the garage, all bets are off...I'll spin her up to the limiter
If I need to trash on something I'll abuse the saab turbo as it is the one I am least partial to.. and it only has 60k miles versus the Z's 100k and the GTO's 120k.
Plus if I mess something up I won't hate myself as much for being a jackass.
And it's not like the Z doesn't get-up-and-go from 600-4krpm.
Am I really missing that much by not spinning her to the limits?

.....
What's the point?!??!
