what is the electical box in the trunk?

what is the electical box in the trunk?
can anyone tell me what the electrical box behind the spare tire is for? what it does? i have a friend rebuilding a 97 z and disconnected some wires back there. now he cant get the car started. he says it will start up for about 4 seconds and then dies. then all it does is turn over. thanks for any help.

Your friend might want to hook the wires back and see if that cures the problems he is having.
