What does everyone think about a Power Programmer??

I heard about these when I had my Z28...And now doing little mods to my 2000 SS i came across HPPs again... how much horsepower gain is there? what else would you have to do to a stock ss to make sure the power programmer doesnt hurt anything by making it go faster now and stuff like that??? Im just curious cause i posted a thing on here before about how im spending 1k on little mods and no one mentioned one of these so it makes me wonder to stay away.....

you got it....STAY AWAY...

money much better spent on a mail order tune or other mods.

some guys see very small gains, others have actually seen none or NEGATIVE gains.

they are advantagous for reading codes, and changing things like fan settings and gears/tire size.
but a mail order can do that and i think is cheaper and the power side of the tune is much better.

www.madz28.com is my suggestion.

programmers are getting better, with downloadable updates to tunes and things like that...but still...money spent elsewhwere i think is the concensus

No one mentions it because it is not a worthwhile mod, especially with a four hundred dollar price tag. The mail-order tune as mentioned above is a more cost effective and dyno proven mod.

Those things have showed minimal/questionable HP gains on STOCK engines. They were made and marketed for STOCK engines only. Once you start adding bolt on's, it even gets worse.

You ever watch HP tv on Sunday mornings.......Saw an episode a while back where the two guys programmed an RED LS1 ( I think it was an LS1 car ) and after they did some exhaust work/re programmed the car, they did their dyno run. I think they got 8 hp at a million RPM. They went to commercial real quick. Anyone else see that one??

Forget about it dude.

I think it's a waste of money. When I bought my Z, the guy gave me the one that he bought for it. The car seems to be the same with or without it. The only difference I've noticed is that with the "power" tuning installed, the car smells very rich. Without it installed, there isn't such a gassy smell to the exhaust. I'd definitely spend the money in other places.

I haven't, but my co-worker did and he was conviced that after installing a cam, headers, and gears on his LS1, the Hypertech would take care of all his programming needs. Needless to say his car died at every light and I told him he needed a real tune, he refused to listen. He finally got a mail-order tune from Fastchips and the problem was solved and the car runs great.
