Re: weight reduction

If your die hard about weight reduction:

Spare/Jack
Front and Rear Bumber Supports (Although I dont suggest it)
Air Pump
AC & Condensor
Washer Fluid Resivoir
Back Seat (But it looks tacky)
Padding under carpeting

Not exactly direct weight reduction but:

Switching to LT headers over facotry manifolds
Relocating battery to trunck for better weight transfer
ORY instead of Cat

Go to the gym

Every hundred pounds you cut, you'll gain a 10th in the quarter. Its not realy worth it though inless your building an all out strip car. Something that is frequently driven should keep the bumber supports. On these cars, theres not alot to do for weight reduction. And to shed 100 lbs, you have to do alot of ****. As a side note, gutted 4th gens look ****ty as hell. No back seat is ghetto. If you want a 2 seater, but a vette. No back seat in Camaros, Firebirds and Mustangs rubs me the wrong way. There's easier ways to gain ET than to strive for weight reduction in a street car.

Re: weight reduction

I think gutted interiors and stuff is cheesy. Its a lot more respectable running fast e/ts with full weight, at least imo. That isn't saying i dont have any weight reduction.
I ran 13.9 full weight with a stereo in my car so i think that is pretty cool.
I took out my spare and jack because i don't usually drive that far and don't need them. He's got a good list for you though. If you want more, start taking out interior stuff, switch to racing seats, lightweight suspension and wheels.

Re: weight reduction

Drill holes through the entire frame and anything important. Shave your rims and take off the mirrors. Replace all of your windows with saran wrap. Dont forget to use thinner belts to get rid of some of that extra weight in rubber. And last. take off your pedals, all you need is the metal arms.

Re: weight reduction

I forgot about the front sway bar

Their heavier than they look.

At any rate though, I WOULD NOT take the front and rear bumber supports off. That could turn a would-be fender bender into an air bag in your face, bent core support, etc. And could be pretty dangerous. If you take the sway bars off, your going to loose driveabilty.

If its a track only car, going to skinnies up front would shave off some more weight and make it hook up better off the line with more weight transfer. They would probably handle like crap though. So if the car still see's street duty, keep your street tires.

Also, if you take the sway bar off, that also could negatively effect handling. Well, it would, not it could. The biggest thing you could do really is to just take it tothe track and run it with 1/4 tank or less of fuel. Gas is like 8 lbs per gallon, a full tank would be pretty heavy too. Something to keep in mind for track days. Have fun.

If you could, it would be awesome to get a before and after weight and list what all you removed ...

I agree with some people though weight reduction on DDs is tacky...

Re: weight reduction

Salad shooters may be ugly wheels, but they are LIGHT

Unless you can justify spending $3500+ for forged wheels, you won't find anything much lighter.

The SLP 2OTL catback is light as hell(and sounds GREAT!)

Lots of weight references here:

Re: weight reduction

Its going to depend on how much you want to "gut" the car. Personally, I don't really like the look of a totally gutted car used for the street. I went with weight reduction that by sitting in the car, you wouldn't be able to see (it still looks fairly stock inside). I went with yanking out the stock K-member, and replacing it, and my stock upper and lower A-arms with some BMR ones. That was a good 80+ pounds off the front end. I am considering yanking out my windshield washer fluid tank as well, seeing as how in the 8 years I've owned it I have never used it. Also the spare tire was yanked out along with the jack. Right now as my car sits with a 1/2 tank of gas, my 95 Z-28 weighs in at 3440. I know I added some weight after putting the 12 bolt in as well, so before that it may have been as light as 3200.

Re: weight reduction

You can do weight savings without stripping the car as long as your willing to spend some money. Fiberglass hood instead of stock steel. BMR K-member and upper/lower A-arms instead of stock stamped stuff. Hollow front/rear sway bars instead of stock or aftermarket solids. Remove spare and Jack (it's heaver then it looks). Lighter battery. Lighter seats. Empty your washer fluid. No need to really remove the tank. QA1 shocks and springs. Lighter wheels in favor of heavy ones and keep them to a 16" to 17" minimum if possible. Check tire weights. You'd be amazed at weight differences between tires of the same size by different manufacturers. Don't pile in a ton of stereo equipment. Aftermarket tubular headers in favor of stock cash irons. Aluminum drive shaft in favor of a steel. All that is a lot of weight savings and if you did a lot or all of that stuff, you really haven't removed anything. All that stuff above can be over 200lbs of weight savings. You can go crazy on weight savings, but you don't really need to if it's your daily driver and still make a difference.

You can't possibly be serious about the wheels right?

The back seats are great if you have kids or midget friends - anyone over 5 foot you have to cram in the backseat of an Fbody.

If your intentions are to mainly run the car on the weekends at the strip - do the weight reductions, most that have replied against weight reduction, no offense, aren't very fast.

Sure you can go fast with full weight but it's gonna cost you more coin. Weight reduction, at least some, is relatively inexpensive.

The wheel comment is ludicrous.

Noting your sig - how in hell can you have an f-body with $60k in it that only runs 11.8's? Gold plated perhaps?

Re: weight reduction

I took out the back seats, spare, backseat brackets, hood insulation, back seatbelts, washer fluid tank, air and egr gone, true duals instead of bulky catback, and added a lightweight battery, aluminum drive shaft . I left in the lightweight sound deadener and replace the heavy carpet with light weight fleece.
